So you're signing Pietrangelo to the exact contract he said no to?

Yes. This is assuming the rumours are true about him wanting/willing to take a hometown discount to go to Toronto. If not, the Leafs can afford to go as high as 8.1 million / year and give the 7 years.

I know. As a Bruins fan that's a tough pill to swallow and not sure if I'd do it either. If some retention is needed to make it happen perhaps?

Yeah well he never said he'd sign a cheaper deal in high taxed Canada, He's not taking more in St Louis and less in Toronto that's just plain laughable.

I wouldn't be willing to retain for the remaining 5 years of the deal, but if you guys have a reasonably small cap dump on a shorter term deal, couple that with like a 3rd round pick and I'd accept that tbh

No, we are not retaining
Also, why does Peitrangelo sign that contract?

Like adding Kase to the deal for instance to play on the 3rd line for Boston. That makes sense for both as it isn't a cap dump but it is 2.75 on the third line in Boston if Marner is now there.

Elite shutdown D + gritty top 6 forward replacement that has scored 27 goals + cap space to sign Petro. I'd consider

Term is 7 years. I don't think he'll be offered over 8 million for over 5 years.

That could work perfectly, as the Leafs could use a depth forward. And it isn't necessarily a cap dump, but it sheds salary and Leafs get a solid player. I'm all for it

But he likely doesn't pay more taxes in Canada. Seems only on CapFRiendly that's its an issue. Not for the Raptors, not the Blue Jays. The personal tax rate means little.

I'd prefer to get a good draft pick too. I'd do Debrusk+Carlo+2021 first rounder for Marner.

I realize the term is 7 years. I'd say 9 milx7 years is what he will and should get. He's just as good as Doughty and Karlsson (better than Karlsson actually).
