I don't understand why leafs fans think the Rangers want Johnsson. He is a somewhat overpriced winger who would be going to a team already overcrowded down the wing. Just doesn't make any sense to me.

I look at it where the Leafs could use some draft capital and a prospect that has yet to be signed. The Rangers could potentially flip Johnsson if he doesn't fit their team.

I was thinking maybe go with New Jersey's 1st but chances are they don't want to give up their own 1st but with 2 other 1st round picks, the Leafs might want the middle of 1st round picks in a deep draft. Plus the Leafs stock the cupboards with Clarke and McCarthy and if they have cap space to sign them in the future, they can sign them. Otherwise, they can trade them for more assets, but I do like the potential of both of them.

The Leafs remain under the cap, sign a few vets who can help the kids (and Tavares), and they don't lose anyone outside of Nylander, Kerfoot and Johnsson. The core remains intact while adding Pietrangelo to help the Leafs defense

Yes... no one besides all forward depth. Your trades are horrible and unnecessary.

Its just for this season, whereas the following season, guys like Simmonds and Thronton could be off the team, the players that the Leafs draft could be developed for a role on the squad, and the Leafs could use some of the cap to get guys for cheap who can be vital to winning the Stanley Cup (the depth is there and the Leafs could use some of the cap to resign Rielly and/or Andersen)

If we learned anything from the Leafs rebuild is that when you have an ample amount of picks, you can afford to give up a few to get a guy or 2 to start in your lineup immediately. The Kings wouldn't do it if they didn't have a surplus of picks but because they do, they can make this move

i like this trade for both teams as well but I would want it to happen at the draft in case there is a guy NJ really likes at 18. Because i think pick 20 could get this done in a pinch depending on who's available and who each team is high on. At that loint in the draft the Leafs and NJ likely have 2 different guys pegged as BPA and would have a sense of when they will be available.

You are also correct in assuming 7OA is not getting moved by NJ.

So how are you getting nylander back? Certainly not with the horrible return you got for him..,

You overpaid Dermott Mikheyev and Rodrigues enough to keep nylander.

Its a realistic possibility for sure because the Leafs could use the cap space and draft capital (then again, who wouldn't) and NJ would get a guy who could be Palmieri's replacement but better. Idk what NJ will get for Palmieri but an opportunity to upgrade with a guy whose proven that he could play and has term on his deal would probably be too good for NJ to pass up. Considering their picks, the Leafs would obviously want one of them but getting 2 is asking for a lot from NJ, which is why I included 2 prospects and a 4th rounder to make the Leafs get value from Nylander and NJ doesn't have to spend a lot for someone like the Islanders did with getting JGP. Both teams benefit from this deal, regardless if it happens before, during or after the draft.
MrGnarVar liked this.

Leafs are getting destroyed in that trade. Period. Anyone who thinks any different doesn’t know a thing about hockey.

Leafs do not need draft capital. Especially latter mid 1sts. They are trying to push now not rebuild. Even if they wanted to rebuild they would get twice that return for nylander. It’s not even close.

They lose one piece of the team and they're rebuilding? Think about this long term. The Leafs get relief from cap space to make room to sign others while getting value in return. The other guys on the Leafs may not be as good as Nylander but the deal is worth it to sign the key guys when their contract is up and whoever the Leafs draft or sign will fill in Nylander's skates. Reminder, they need to sign Andersen should the Leafs keep him and Rielly might be looking at a big payday in 2 years. This trade works for the Leafs.

Maybe in a normal season but with the expansion draft coming up the Kings are better off with the picks and cap space.

Still got enough cap space to use $5 million in players they can use to keep protected. Getting rid of 2 mid round picks and a low-mid tier prospect shouldn't hinder the Kings from doing this deal.

The Kings can find better fits for their future than Kerfoot and two prospects, one that will be UFA at the end of next year. Cap space is at a premium this year and those who have it can shoot for the moon in trades since other teams with be looking to do the same.

It would be something for LA to want. 3 guys who are established and can play in the NHL immediately, as opposed to waiting on how long their picks will be to make it to the NHL (minus the 2nd overall pick, who will probably be NHL Ready regardless of who they choose)

You're right, they dont need draft capital, they need cap space to improve the right side. The only assets they can take on that doesn't eat into their cap space are picks and prospects.

The whole league knows that Toronto wants a good RHD whether it be Petro (who wont be signing at 8mill if he goes to UFA), Vatanen, Schultz, or Brodie and needs to clear cap to do so. Cap space is an asset and no good GM is gona do the Leafs any favors. This is especially true with the flat cap and limited teams that will have the space and desire to take on salary this offseason.

This is strictly a cap dump by Toronto. They love to hand out large dollar contracts to the next best thing, until something else catches their eye and throw a lot of money at them too. Kings will wait and see how desperate some teams are to move players or contracts this off season. There will be plenty to pick from.

Leafs do not need to clear out 16m in cap space. We are also not moving out nylander for less than Kapanen... all to overpay depth guys and leave over 4m in cap space.

You like this trade for New Jersey. If you like it for the leafs it’s out of spite.

The Kings are just under $17 million from the cap and they could use a LW, and Kerfoot can play LW. If Toronto wants to get value out of Kerfoot, a few prospects can sweeten the deal for them. Otherwise, I can see maybe a mid round pick for Kerfoot only but getting 2 picks off of the Kings will likely need prospects to be involved for LA to make this deal
