1) Pietrangelo will be 30 when his contracts starts while Petry will be 34.
2) Pietrangelo will be 34 when the 5th year of his contract stars.
3) Pietrangelo is way way better and more valuable than Petry.
Sorry bud.
Yeah no ****. That's why one is getting 9+ and Petry got 6.2
There are currently no salary concerns. Also our cap space is spread out along the 3 main positions (Forward/Defense/Goaltending) and we can roll all 4 lines.
EXCUSE ME WHAT?
By next season, Montreal has to re-sign these 9 players:
Domi
Tatar
Gallagher
Danault
Armia
Lehkonen
Kotkaniemi
Mete
Weal
And they're already paying these 9 players $50,000,000:
So they have $32,000,000 leftover to sign all 9 guys.
Plus another 5 guys on top of that, so 14 total.
Good luck.
Would be able to write it on if I wasn't on Mobile but there are no concerns.
Tatar - If he stays 6 Million
Domi - If he stays 5.5-6 Million
Gallagher - If he stays 6-6.5 Million
Danault - If he stays 6 Million
Kotkaniemi - 3-4 Million bridge
That is 28 Million if we resign everyone that's core. The other players are intangibles that can be replaced if needed.
Difference is Petry got 6.25 and Pietragelo will get 9+. Petry can become a #4 and still be worth his contract. Pietrangelo has to be a #1 to be worth his.
Don't know why you say PIetrangelo will get 9 plus. Just the not the cap available to spend that much, in a flat cap league and where RFAs are now earning more. It post Covid 2020.
No it's because Pietrangelo is way better than Petry.

Tell me how
Pietrangelo came 4th place in Norris voting this year (160 out of 160 voters gave him a top 5 vote - every single one). Jeff Petry was left off a long list of Norris candidates this year (literally zero out of 160 voters game him a top 5 vote).
Every single member of the Professional Hockey Writers Association thinks Pietrangelo is better than Petry.

Ok that's fair.
But even in the situation you're describing, you're now left with $4,000,000 in cap space to fill the 9 remaining roster spots.

Pietrangelo reported rejected an 8x8 contract. He's going to want more than that especially is he can only get 7 years

Why don't you ask them?
3 people also left Mackinnon off of their ballot for MVP that vote means nothing

Apparently he rejected 8.5m contract pre Covid. Apparently the Blues offered 7.7m recently....but lets say 8m. So what if Pietrangelo rejected 8m, sure doesn't mean he going to get offered 9m from any team. And certainly good teams...almost are close to the cap, aren't going to dismantle their lineup to fit in Pietrangelo.
