Laine

Description
So I know there will be controversy over, well all of this but this was my thinking of each trade.

1) The big one - Basically it is allows Winnipeg to guarantee a 1st pairing RHD that plays on the Power Play and still have Eberle who can instantly plug in Laines spot in the lineup (Less Production of coarse but Pulock more than makes up for that and Eberle is cost controlled.) Pulock is also an RFA that helps Winnipeg negotiate money. In exchange we’ll, the NYI get Laine, enough said lol (Only speed bump will be the terms of eberle’s NTC or he could waive it)

2) This trade is a little tougher, because if LA doesn’t want Uncle Leo the trade could still happen but I figured LA taking some of the cap of Komarov would allow LA to retain assets for their rebuild and add a 3rd Rounder. (Leo and Leddy are both roster players)

3) Calgary is losing defense to free agency and Hickey could honestly be a good stop gap while they rebuilt their back end. He is cheap and could be a serviceable 5/6/7 dman.

The next season the Islanders have a 1st to send Ladd to Seattle to pay for upcoming RFA’s (Laine and Beau)

Bode Wilde will have to be groomed to take over for Boychuk in the upcoming years.

If needed the isles have another million this season to add to Barzal’s contract, but it’s signed as a pure bridge deal to a post covid world.

Pulock is nice, but doesn't start the conversation for Laine.

I’d much rather just do Pulock for Ehlers

Speak for yourself, Pulock would be a great starting point. He’s exactly why the Jets need in the T4

He's a good player, but he can be had for a lot less that Laine.

Well, that would be the starting point. Doubt Isles fans would love it but Pulock/Nelson?

If we're moving Laine I wouldn't want a 29 year old as part of the return. He's a good player, just too old if we're giving up a 22 year old scoring star.

While I agree, Pulock would be the centrepiece. A big, mobile RHD with a bomb of a shot who we could lock up long term.
Your naive to think we can get a T4 RHD and a T6 centre, both being the same age as Laine along with picks and/or prospects. We will get 1 player that fits one of our positional needs (Pulock for example), one older roster player (Eberle or Nelson, again as an example) and whatever top up is required, and could be from us, who knows. I really don’t think we would be getting a kings ransom for him. I’d be happy with what I stated above.

No matter who’s involved, it looks like the Islanders trading a defenseman to Winnipeg for a forward can benefit both teams. It’s just who and for how much on both sides. Winnipeg’s biggest advantage is in the cap space they have.

I never said we'll get a going top 4D and young 2C for him. I actually think we won't trade him, because we won't get those things. I think you're being a bit naive if you think the Jets will just give Laine away for an offer that "is close enough" when they don't have a reason to trade him. Why do we have to discount Laine's value while simultaneously valuing all other players at their max value when we are trading away the best piece by far?

I’m with you, I don’t think they trade him, and I don’t what them to trade him. I’m just saying if they do, the return will be less than what fans expect. I would much rather see PoMo and Wheels move before any of our young guys.

I agree with you on getting less than expected if Laine is traded, but we both know Wheeler isn't getting moved. A star player committing to the team when he could have went anywhere. It's not True North's style.

I don't know about PoMo though. Yes he's stubborn, but a lot of coaches are. Eventually the players need to be held responsible for under performing. Something is missing in the chemistry, hopefully Chevy has an idea of what it is. Maybe you're right and it is a guy like Nelson.
