This is what a poor GM would do. While I really hope we get Tanev, I would wait for the first wave of signings to pass. I'd wager that beyond the top 4-5 guys on the market (Pietrangelo, Hall, Markstrom and maybe 1 or 2 others,) the market will dry right up as most teams are not looking to add salary. When that happens, a team that can offer a lot of bonus money may be able to convince a guy to take a short term deal to build his value in a media rich environment and hope to cash in once the economy is rolling again. So what I would do is talk to Tanev, Homanic, maybe even Brodie and say, how about 1 or 2 years around 3-3.5 million and we'll give max bonus money. It won't tie up a roster spot that Liljegren, Sandin or possibly a defenceman we draft this year could win down the road.

I don't think that 4th pick need to be in the Kerfoot deal, but I think it makes sense for both teams. Dont think Dermott's RFA rights are worth much, probably more like a 5th round pick. Tanev could be asking for more as a UFA, but not impossible he goes that price to play in TOR. Not a huge fan off putting Liljegren, Sandin, and Ambramov into the starting lineup just yet, could get cheap UFAs to fill those spots while they develop in more reserved roles, maybe Mark Borowiecki, Trevor van Riemsdyk, and another year of Spezza. You also need another forward, always wanna have that 23 man roster. A bunch of little things, but they add up.
