Slow and Steady Wins the Cup

Created by: TCMonkey
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 2, 2020
Published: Oct. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
On a team that is looking to be competitive but nowhere close to making the playoffs, Bozak can be a top 6 pivot. This allows him to play with talented wingers and get PP time. He will pad his stats nicely and, as a rental, will be moveable at the trade deadline. We easily get a 4th if not a 3rd.
Virtanen and Duclair are both on one-year deals as one OR BOTH will be moved as rentals at the deadline and will snag 2nd rounders at the very, VERY least.
I toyed with the idea of giving Tierney a 1 year deal but decided to give him some term.
I have no idea how our RHD will shake out after camp but given that all of them are probably bottom 4 does it really matter?
Our 1st round 2020 picks: SJS - Byfield/Stutzle, OTT - Raymond/Rossi, EDM - Quinn/Schneider/Askarov/Lapierre??

Bozak could be a good leader for the sens but I don't think he would waive his no trade to go there

That Russel trade is one I look at happening but with Ottawa picking up,Josh Brown , I see that as a decreased chance happening now. Picking up cap space and forwards from Vancouver is still very much a possibility to me.

Nope oilers aren’t moving from 14 to the end of the first round just to move a solid depth defender that’s only owed less than half his cap hit. You might be able to get russell for next to nothing but oilers aren’t going to pay anything significant to move him.

I guess it depends on what he's thinking about AFTER this contract. If he wants to retire, I might agree with you - he could hold out to start the season with a contender. BUT, if he wants another contract, he should note what Ottawa did for Ennis and Namestnikov. Getting those extra minutes with better line mates and 1st unit PP... makes a BIG difference. Also, he'd know that Ottawa would move him at the deadline to playoff team anyway. So he still ends up with a contender. It's a bit of a win win for him.

It's a pretty good thought, I'm just not sure he leaves a lower tax state on his last year of big ticket money to lose more money in taxes to take that gamble, it's a good gamble that I would agree with you on but it's the " what if I can't get a new contract"

But that's not the whole deal. They shed $4M in cap (the number that matters most right now) and swap the 14th OA for the 21st and 51st OA.

It’s the 28th pick Edmonton would move back 14 spots not happening
To get holland attention it would have to be 28, 33 and 64 picks for the 14th and Russell at 1mil owed salary.

Then I guess you can keep that $4M in cap, pick 14th OA and then again at.... scrolling, scrolling.... oh there it is, 137th OA.

But russell is the only “bottom pair” d oilers have that is proven capable of filling in a top four role when needed. With news about klef being out long term I’m not sure moving russell is as high of a priority as it might have been without that news. Issue I have moving from 14-21 is 12-16 I’m fairly convinced is where the steals of this draft will take place 14 is right smack dab in the middle of it. I’m just not into sliding out of that spot just to save some cap. I will admit pick 51 did make me stop and think briefly so perhaps it’s not as bad as originally made it out to be that I apologize for but still that’s not something I’d pull trigger on. Another reason I haven’t been into moving russell is I view his cap hit as banked money for upcoming extensions and with a flat cap if move him now then use cap with any term it very much complicates next offseason with nuge and yam up for extension.

Thank you for pointing out the correction of which pick that is. I thought it was well later than 21 but just went with that since I don’t think it would matter for holland in this case. 14 is prime spot REALLY don’t want to move from.

We have to option to decline the 3rd pick in the Lucic deal till next yr
So pick 14 and our 3rd which is better the 28th and 51 as the 14th pick hold close to double the value of the 28th pick.

I understand not wanting to give up that 14th OA. But you need to improve your team now, not in two years. McDavid has been patient but I can't imagine he'll be thrilled if there aren't significant improvements made going into next season.

The oilers were second in the division and battling Vegas for top spot at the pause
People are making to much out what happened to the team that lost in the qualifying rd
The closet thing you can compare the restart to is the beginning of a new season with 1 exhibition game instead of 7
Dallas started the season with 1 win in their first 10 I believe and they ended up in the cup final
Don’t put to much stock into 1 week of bad hockey off a 4 month break.
The team made major improvements last yr
Not moving the 14 pick to clear cap Russell contract can be moved for much less if it’s deemed holland want that cap space.
