Move While Value is Going Up

Created by: BombSquad
Team: 2016-17 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 15, 2016
Published: Oct. 17, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First off, obviously this does not happen until Murray returns to full health.

I was struct by an idea today as I watched Cam Talbot let in a goal from center ice. Fleury's value is already significantly higher than it was in the offseason, and will continue to rise if he continues to win games in Murray's absence.

Id say that we wait until murray can prove he can handle a full workload. He only played in a couple games last year than in the playoffs and was starting to get exposed their. I say once murray comes back we give him until the deadline to win back his job. If he doesnt we trade him, if he does we trade flower.

I'll give you a fair point about the workload but I wouldn't call .930 and 2.00 (2.08 and .923 in the playoffs) as "exposed."

As much as every Pens fan wants to root for Fleury to reclaim his spot, personally I can't look past the big picture. Every "keep Fleury trade Murray" argument is based on the premise that Fleury is still the better goalie right now (which is debatable but for the sake of argument lets say it is true) but think about the difference between a 22 and 31 year old goalie then think about a 24 and 33 year old goalie. Goalies almost always improve from age 22 and hit prime around 24-25, while sharp decline generally begins in the early 30s. 2 years ago, no one dared question Lundqvist and Rinne as 2 of the best goaltenders in the NHL (both were Fleury's age 2 seasons ago) and now they have regressed to the upper-middle of the pack. Still starters for sure but definitely not what they used to be. Fast forward a few more years to Ryan Miller at 36 who is pretty much a shell of his old self nowadays.

My bottom line: Fleury might be the better option in the year 2016 (emphasis on might), but the odds of him being the best option for the 2018-2019 season are very slim. Sure, a rotation between 2 quality goalies is a great short term option but expansion draft means the choice needs to be made sooner than later, and I'll roll with the kid who just brought the cup back to Pittsburgh, even if it means taking an occasional lump or 2 this year as he gets accustomed to handling a bulk of NHL regular season starts.

True but i think the big reason GMJR kept flower is because hes seen too many goalies be great for a couple months then fizzle out. Look at condon as the best example. Kid was great for montreal for the first three months he started then he started to fizzle out. Murray has a problem with shots that go high glove side or just high period. It was something teams should have done alot more of during the playoffs and when they did go there it went behind him.

BombSquad. Nice critique on goalies. My view on the duo of Murray/Fleury. It's a long season and to be a Cup contender you need two good goalies, maybe with a long term injury might even need three good NHL goalies. I wouldn't trade at least guy till the end of the season (probably Fleury if possible). Don't worry about the expansion draft till next JUne.

I agree with waiting until the season is over. Jarry's progression in WBS will also play a big role in the decision being made. Why keep Murray if you already have a good young goalie chomping at the bit to get to the NHL level? Murray is obviously going to bring in more in terms of trade value, and you don't have to worry about Fleury waiving his trade clause or only having a few select teams to chose from. Edmonton and Calgary may be on the cusp of making the playoffs this year, where goal tending could be the difference maker in them being a playoff team. You think they want a few years of Fleury or a franchise goalie in Murray?
