current oilers team please comment

Created by: skysniper_11
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 10, 2020
Published: Oct. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I actually like the team a lot, would've been nice to get a better 1B goalie but, if klef comes back right before playoffs his cap hit will be tiny and the top 6 Dmen would be:
nurse Bear/Barrie
Klef Bear/Barrie
Russel Larsson

maybe there no true number 1 dman but thats a solid top 6 overall

now if (this is a big if) the third line can get some offence going with Turris and Jesse this team will be better then last years, I'm optimistic. downside is we still have very few draft picks next year, may have to convince some college free agents/ older Europeans to come over in order to fill the farm, maybe we trade some prospects like marody or samorukov for picks during the season.
Thoughts?

(not sure why it show smith is 1.5 mill when he signed for 2 but oh well)

Kassian and Ennis are not top 6 forwards. They can fill in if need be but my guess is JP gets a shot at McDavids wing first. Neal can’t play 5v5 he’s better left on the bench until it’s time for a PP. I don’t mind Kris Russell or Jones getting a few looks at top 4 but they really need to find a top 4 LD. Jones wasn’t too bad this year when Klefbom was out with injuries but you could tell he wasn’t ready for that role and Russell has regressed to a bottom pairing d over the last 3 seasons.

I mean no offense but this team as it's currently constructed won't make the playoffs to see Klef play - even though your in the Pacific - Sharks will be better, LA is better, Anaheim is better. Oil are basically the same but weaker on D.

I hope the JP gets chance but I want him to earn that chance on the third line first. I'm more optimistic on the LD they will defs struggle without kelf but Jones I think is poised for a breakout year and if not Russel can hold his own defensively on the second pairing as long as he's with a good puck mover.

Mcdavid makes players top line wingers. Look at maroon. Jp getting a shot at mcdavid's line depends on whether mcdavid wants to play with him because in 2017-18 and 18-19, mcjesus didn't want to play with him you never know

Thats kind of ridiculous no offense they were second in the pacific with weak puck moving there puck moving has now increased with Barrie replacing Benning, and defensively Jones/Russel can make up the difference for klef. maybe the overall defending goes down a small bit but the 3rd line should be significantly better to say that they won't make playoffs is ignoring alot of facts.

I heard McDavid didn't want to play with JP due to JPs bad positioning, theoretically that should have improved along with the language barrier if he truly has been working on his english.

I watched his interview and his english has improved from before. Not perfect but it is improving

Maybe I'm bullish but I think there's a lot of potential for a productive 3rd line not sure what the combination would be, maybe Neal gets switched with Nygard or maybe marody or benson shock everyone and come into camp ready for the show.

Yeah, I think so too. They’re going to need a young D-man like Evan Bouchard or Broberg to step in and give them quality minutes in order to offset the loss of Klefbom. I think Broberg is promising , but still year or two away so I think Bouchard is going to have to be the guy that proves his worth.

They were also seperated from the Leafs by 2 points (Leafs had a game in hand) and this has been argued as a massive failure season for the Leafs yet a great success for the Oilers - I believe the Oilers overachieved this past season due the rest of the Pacific under achieving - like I said there is no improvement to this squad - still missing 2 top 6 F, goal tandem is still mediocre at best and with Klef out that's a massive blow to the D core that was not addressed , yes this team will be loads of fun to watch but they will ultimately fail to make the top 16
