Honestly both general opinions may be right at the same time. This is precisely why GM's say its hard to makes trades.
If the Bickell trade is the logic here, lets look at this trade:
Bickell - Stoner: Stoner is a better, cheaper and more useful player than Bickell is but Stoner has an extra year of contract which for a player you don't want carries quite a bit of value. I'd think if we want to put a value to this, it'll be almost even. Maybe a slight edge to Stoner.
Montour - Teravainen: Montour has put up very good numbers in the NHL and has some potential to be good dman but I wouldn't necessarily crown him more valuable then Teravainen. As of right now I got to think Teravainen has more value as a player but that's not to say Montour doesn't. They're both good prospects. Once again at least a slight edge to Teravainen though.
2nd and 3rd rounder for eachother pretty much even out. The picks will land pretty much around the same spots in the draft either way. Maybe a bit better last year.
Finally, the last part of this analysis is the pressure to make the move for each GM.
Murray needs the space to sign Lindholm but has a few other options if push comes to shove. I know they are in win now mode but if they have to trade a player like Fowler for picks and prospects, at least they'll have the cap space to add at the deadline to help with the loss off Fowler. IF the date is November 30th, he'll move a good player for futures to ensure they get Lindholm signed. If not I guarantee an offer sheet will come. GM's are being respectful and are giving Murray time to get it done but if Lindholm is going to not sign for the whole year as a result, a team like New Jersey will absolutely swoop in.
Bowman needed the space to get under the cap. They couldn't just trade a player of value away as all of them are stars.
Who has more pressure? That's a tough one. The more i think about it, the more its seems pretty evenly tough either way and both GM's were under the gun.
Final analysis: I think the offer is pretty decent. I know Anaheim fans won't like it but think of it this way, this is the best move without losing a key part of the team. I know hindsight is always 20/20 but if this move guarantees ANA signing Lindholm and then the Ducks win the cup this year, wasn't it worth losing Montour for? Yeah of course it would be nicer to just trade Stoner straight up for a draft pick but good luck with that. I think for what he brings, there are cheaper options available.
