Lose Myers in Expansion

Created by: canuck_in_the_6ix
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 22, 2020
Published: Oct. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Minimal changes to the team, lots of internal promotion of high-promise prospects that will hopefully get experience and prove themselves in 2020-2021. Losing Myers in expansion should help with re-signing Petey and Hughes to long term. Cernak miiiiiiight be attainable if we make use of LTIR and bury some contracts + papering players down without waviers to start off 2020-2021, or he can be a placeholder for some young, defensively responsible RD that a team may no longer have room to pay or slots to protect in the upcoming expansion.

Seems like every "homer" expects Seattle to take a bad contract from their team. Not happening.

ya theyd probably take holtby before myers
or Lind
or MacEwen
or Leivo/whatever winger UFA if we sign him
or Cernak/whatever FA RD we sign
or Motte if we leave him exposed
or Pearson if we extend and leave him exposed

Even with GMJB in charge, none of those Mid-low tier RFAs are getting 2-3mil cap hit deals. Seriously, why are Juolevi and Rafferty getting 2mil when neither has played more than 10mins at the NHL level yet, and in a flat cap? You must be expecting Gaudette to have a breakout year in 2021 to be getting a 3mil contract.

Wtf is Roussel on the 2nd line? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Depends if they think Myers is a legit top 4 D or not. Lind/MacEwen/Motte are horrible pickups for expansion, Leivo/whatever UFA winger isn't going to get anymore than a 1x1 deal (and thus not eligible for expansion), and Cernak/Pearson/whatever RD will be protected if we get them. The best Seattle is going to get from us is Holtby (aging goalie, 1 year contract may be seen as a positive or a negative depending on his play this year), Myers ("big minutes top 4 D" for 3 years would be seen as some GMs as a good thing, overblown as his rep may be among the analytics community), or one of our 4th liners/B- prospects.

This is for 2021-2022, so presumably they will have played NHL minutes, and ideally done well enough in them to warrant 2x2. Honestly the bigger assumption here is that both Juolevi and Rathbone will be able to step up and replace 2/3LD. If they don't do well enough, great, we save some money and can use some of the space to pay off performance bonuses that Petey/Hughes will have undoubtedly earned, and perhaps Rathbone/Juolevi/Pod/Hog if we're lucky. Same applies to Gaudette - I'd rather be projecting overpayments than unrealistic underpayments.

Roussel on the 2nd line is a placeholder for Hog's development, Roussel did pretty well with Bo two years ago before he got injured. I'd really rather not sign an overpriced UFA (and we don't really have the room for it) for probably too much term and end up blocking Hog's prime minutes in the roster. I suppose another option is somehow getting a young, good value LW for longer term to replace Miller the year after, but the cap navigation gets trickier and it's not like young AND good players are easy to come by.

They're either getting a bad contract or a replacement level player. They can either have Eriksson, Roussel, Beagle, Motte, MacEwen, Myers, a clearly declining Holtby, or a completely unproven prospect who hasn't been good enough to deserve protection and has taken so long to develop that they're not exempt from the expansion draft. And if any one of those 5 forwards is decent we can still protect them. This does rely on Benning not signing some Dman as expansion exposure fodder in order to protect Myers though, which would be kinda classic Benning.

Seattle would prefer to select an AHL player which doesn't her the cap implications, and then have 6m to spend on UFA, rather team draft a bad contract like Myers or Erikssson.
