Pens 3 team trade Tyler Johnson Contract

Created by: HockeyTownUSA69
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 11, 2020
Published: Nov. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Three team trade. Detroit takes on Tyler Johnson and his contract and get M.Pettersson. 24 years old, top 4 D, signed to long term, 5 year deal, till he is 29 @ 4M per.

TB gets rid of Tyler Johnson Contract and give up Blake Coleman to do it. They also get J.Riikola and 5th round pick back. They can use Riikola as their 7th D. He plays both RHD and LHD just as well. Or they can bury his 1.1M contact in the minors for just 75K cap hit. And have him has depth in case of injury.

He’s better than that though!! A perfect 7th Dman. Can play LHD and RHD and on the 2nd or 3rd D pairing if someone misses time. Came over from Russia 2 years ago at 25 years old and played well in Limited time. Every analyst and fan was screaming for him to play more last year instead of Jack Johnson. But for some reason Sully like giving JJ and Shultz 14-16 minutes every night!! Rikkola is better than A.Borgman and like I said, TB will only have to carry one healthy scratch as a D b/c Riikola can play both sides equally well. I think he will give Ryan McDonough some nights off too. TB will like him.

Pens get Blake Coleman and 1 year of V.Filppula and Pat Nemeth. They give up M.Pettersson, J.Riikola and the 5th round pick.

Pens sign Andy Greene as 7th D to take Riikola spot. For 1M and 1 year.

And The Pens will have V.Filppula, Pat Memeth, Andy Greene, and Ceci’s contracts coming off the books and expiring at years end!! 8M plus!! Along with Blake Coleman and his 1.8M( but hopefully in this deal, we would be able to sign Blake Coleman to an extension. Like 1.25M-1.75M for 3-4 years).

Nexts years UFA class is unreal!! Full of Stars!! And even Taylor Hall and Bobby Ryan just signed 1 year deals and both be UFA again next year!! But they are even the in top 10 next year!! And most likely it’s gonna be another flat cap year, and cap strapped teams!! And players taking less money!! So next year having this cap space is huge!! Look at the list of 2020-21 UFA’s!! It’s stacked!!

I wouldn't take that trade straight up let alone giving up Filppula and Nemeth.

Edit: Also, I don't think Filppula is for sale I think Yzerman is letting his old buddy retire a Red Wing.

Ok, Pettersson would be the best Defender on your team!! You obviously don’t know who he is. And only 24 years old. A top 4 D. Would be on Detroit's top paring. He’s better than D.Cholowski. Way better than Nemeth. And Nemeth is overpaid. Pettersson has a good deal at 24 years old.

I was gonna put Filppula or F.Nielsen in the deal. Neither have any use in Detroit this year or next. And M.Pettersson does. Fits with Detroit’s young core!!

I thought maybe they signed Filppula back to Detroit to let him retire there. Good to know!! Stevie Y did say that though?? He signed him back to Detroit so he could retire there??

And Tyler Johnson still gets Detroit younger at their 2nd or 3rd line Center.

A couple things.

Cholowski isn’t a NHL regular so not sure why you brought him up. DDK - Hronek is our top pairing at the moment when DDK recovers from injury.

Filppula and Nielsen have widely different values. Nielsen is a major cap dump. Steve gave Flip a NTC and talked at the last press conference how Flip asked for one and only would sign if he had a NTC.

These moves are somewhat strange to me in that I don’t think they make the Pens really any better but you’d know the team better. Why wouldn’t you just try to sign Haula or something cheap for depth scoring?

I’d prefer not for the pens to do this. MP is the best piece in this 3 team trade by far and we also give up Riikola. So we kill our left side and only get Coleman in return. No reason to pay to help out TB either.

Yeah I hate to eat Johnsons money but for petterson I'd think about it. LD is super weak and a long term guy would be welcome. Why youd want to give up a young 2nd pair dman for 3 guys with 1 year deals Idk.

Yes Hronek is a RHD. Pettersson and Cholowski are LHD. A different position. Again, Petterson would be your top pairing now and even when Cholowski gets regular playing time. And again, Pettersson is still just 24, played 20 minutes a game last year. Proven top 4 D on a play-off team. Signed to a long term, good deal, 4M/year, until he is 29.

DDK is 31 and not on Detroit’s timeline, part of their future IMO. And I think that’s Pettersson career floor. Is DDK career. His ceiling is higher.

I’m not a big Haula fan, injury prone. And IMO our 3rd RW needs more help than 3rd Line C.

I thought Filppula has shown a much bigger drop off the last 3-4 years than Nielsen. But I understand if He would want to retire in Detroit and Stevie Y brought him back to have a final year or 2 in Detroit during a rebuild and to mentor some young prospects. I just didn’t read anywhere that was the plan though. But I’m not super up on all things red wings either!! Lol.

The cap room next year during a deep FA class and with the hopes of resigning Blake Coleman.

And going for it this year!! LHD is probably our deepest position. Yes, Pettersson is great. People love him in PGH And so does the organization!! I’m sure their will be Pens fans on this thread saying no to the deal. And he’s young and was just signed long term to a good deal.

But like I said, go for it this year, and P-O Joseph, who is a top 100 prospect is NHL ready. So we can bring him up next year to take Pettersson spot. And have all the cap room after the expansion draft and when Pat Nemeth and Fillppula contracts expire after this year.

IMO, TB is paying with Blake Coleman. A really good Defensive forward. Had Selke votes last year, was 22nd in the voting, the only Pens above him were Tanev at 18th in the voting. ZAR and Blueger were both below him. And he can score too. Scored 21 goals last year in a shortened season and 22 the year b4. Brings toughness too, which we need. And I would do the deal with the hopes of re-signing him.

And we would get a 3rd line Center in Filppula for this year and Pat Nemeth to take Pettersson spot for this year. And P-O Joseph is NHL ready by all reports. A top 100 prospect!! Played over 25 minutes a game last year in his 1st year in the AHL. The coach loves him, put him in all situations, PK and PP. Said he could have played NHL minutes last year. The Pens can bring him up next year to take Pettersson spot and Pat Nemeth and V.Filppula contracts expire at years end. And a very deep FA class next year. Super deep!!

So we go for it this year with the 3 players we get in the deal, that IMO make our team much better. And sign Andy Greene to take Riikola’s spot. And all the contracts come off the books at years end( but hopefully we would re-sign B.Coleman). Along with Ceci’s contract and we can go for again next year and go after big FA’s in another year where teams are most likely gonna be cap strapped again and it’s gonna be a flat cap again. And players are gonna be taking less money. And next year the FA class is stacked. Has Stars!! Not Players like Haula and Granlund. And better than T.Hall and T.Krug and A. Pietrangelo. In fact, T.Hall just signed a one year deal and will be a FA again next year. Same with Bobby Ryan. And a lot more stars!!

We want cap room next year!!

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/best-nhl-unrestricted-free-agents-ufas-of-2021/

And Taylor Hall and Bobby Ryan just signed to 1 year deals this year. Both are UFA next year again too!! And P.Laine is probably gonna get traded. And like I said, most likely it’s gonna be a flat cap year again!! Teams are gonna be cap strapped. We would have 8M plus come rght off our books in V.Filppula, Pat Nemeth, Andy Greene, and Ceci!! Plus the 1.8M from Blake Coleman!! But I would hope in this deal we would resign/extend him to a 3-4 year deal at about 1.25M-1.75M per year.

And IMO we still be going for it this year too. V.Filppula is a upgrade over Haula or Granlund or anyone we would sign. So is Blake Coleman. And Pat Nemeth wouldn’t be a terrible downgrade on D for 1 year. Especially if we signed Andy Greene too. And P-O Joseph or possibly Cam Lee could even win the spot in training camp.

I know exactly who he is and you clearly don't know anything about the Red Wings if Nielsen and Filppula are interchangeable to you lol. Hronek would still be better than Pettersson. Petterson's contract also isn't the best nor is Johnson (One of the biggest cap dumps right now) so we would be taking on 10+ million for multiple years when we are rebuilding and could use that valuable cap to obtain picks/prospects.

Yes, Johnson is a cap dump. Pettersson, 24 years old, proven top 4 D on a play-off team, singed long term, till he is 29, at 4M per, is a good contract. But whatever man, not a big deal. And I never said Filppula and Nielsen are inter changeable. V.Filppula isa boarderline HOF(defiantly in the Hall of really good!!). I said Filppula has regressed more over the passed 3-4 years more than Nielsen. And trade wise. Right now, their value isn’t much different. 36 year old players, at the end of their careers. And Nielsen has been more productive the last couple years as they both regress. Nemeth is also a cap dump. Same with Nielsen and Filppula!! Both have very little value right now.

I’ll agree with that. I think TB is gonna have to retain atleast 1M of T.Johmson’s contract to get rid of him. I didn’t think Detroit was giving up that much though either. I’m a Filppula fan, but his value now can’t be that great if they were to trade him. Which is probably unlikely at best!!

And I agree with you, it's not about giving up a lot, it's about taking on a lot, that's why tampa adds on, but otherwise I don't see the trade being terrible as long as tampa adds here

The problem is that Coleman will likely want big money. At least what MP was making, if not more if he has another good year. Which they will choose Marino’s extension before Coleman’s. And it was already going to be hard enough to re-sign Marino, Blueger, and ZAR already. And if Matheson has a great year then Seattle likely takes him making our LD go from being kinda deep to very weak. We are already banking on Maniscalco taking a Marino path for next year. If that doesn’t happen then our d as a whole becomes extremely weak. I just feel right now MP is more valuable to us than Coleman is.

I agree. Except, I don’t think Coleman, at 29-30 years old, is gonna get “big money though. Especially if it’s a flat cap again. Yes, he’s tough, and I’m a fan!! I like him!! But I think 2.5M/ year tops. Especially if u are giving him 3-4 year term. I would like to see him get paid, like I said, I’m a fan. But 7M over 4 years probably does it. And that’s 1.75M per.

I just think that’s too much of a risk. Cause you’ll have one of those teams that have a ton of cap room likely throw something in the 4 million range at him if he kills it this year. And I just think defense and goaltending are going to be more important as the core gets older and starts to lose a bit offensively. It’s kinda like robbing Peter to pay Paul. I’d rather sign a Haula or Granlund even and not give up defense. Hope Matheson has a stellar year and Seattle takes him or Tanev off our hands to give us the cap next year to throw money at Coleman for free.
I also just wouldn’t jump to help TB. It’s time GMJR starts taking advantage of desperate gm’s as opposed to the other way around lol.
