This would be the only scenario that would make sense to me. I don't think the Penguins are looking to move Maatta just for another RHD. Flames get a goalie to build around (Elliot wasn't that guy) and a veteran defenseman that can play pretty much anywhere with anyone. Pouliot is there as a cheap player who shows promise and needs a shot, which the Penguins aren't really built to allow for. I think this trade makes much more sense for both sides than the Maatta trades being thrown around on here.

That veteran Defenseman is a pending UFA. And on the PIT side, they now have 4 defenseman in need of protection from the Expansion Draft (Letang, Maatta, Hamilton, and Dumolin). Which means now instead of protecting 7F/3D they're limited to 8 skaters. With 4 being defenseman, that means they're protecting Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, and Hornqvist. A barren collection of LWs is going to be even thinner next year if/when Vegas takes Hagelin.
