USA Juniors Reunification

Created by: leaflet
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 25, 2020
Published: Dec. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
How about reuniting Tkachuk-Matthews-White from the 2015 world juniors on the same team? Would this team be any good?

The other signings are speculative. It's tough to say who among the new acquisitions will stay next year. Maybe Lehtonen pans out and stays, while Vesey leaves instead. I'm also assuming that Dermott is picked by Seattle.

Wait why is Calgary adding a 3rd?

This is terrible for Calgary, and Ottawa takes the deal and runs.

Just a small compensation for the 20-30 extra points Marner would score every year.

But let's not get into minutiae. Wouldn't that US 2015 line be great or what?

Flames would rather have Tkachuk whi is our future captain AND best player over a overpaid player. Plus we would be 3+ million over the cap

most people would rather have Tkachuk than Marner though and it is definitely not a 20-30 point difference its more like a 15 point difference and that's with Backlund as the center vs Matthews/Tavares.
i would bet Tkachuk scores more points than Marner does if they swapped teams

Yeah I like Marner but I have to admit Tkachuk brings more to the table than him. Maybe not as skilled but offers more of the intangibles plus is a hardworker.

Matthew Tkachuk is really being undersold here.

This is an underrated comment, and is very sound reasoning. I wouldn't bet Tkachuk scores more points than Marner if they swapped, but it's very possible.

Tkachuk goals to assists ratio is 1:1.5, which means he would benefit from a better skilled centre, both goals and assists.
Marner goals to assist ratio is 1:2.5, which means he would suffer from having less skilled scorers.

Tkachuk versus Marner
Tkachuk is 7 months younger than Marner, both are wingers
Tkachuk is a couple inches taller, and about 25 lbs heavier than Marner

19/20 season
Tkachuk 1.96 points per 60 minutes 5v5
Marner 2.19 points per 60 minutes 5v5

Tkachuk 5.79 hits per 60 minutes
Marner 1.13 hits per 60 minutes

Marner makes $4MM more now, but probably closer to only $1MM-$2MM more in a couple seasons.

Take out the 3rd, and it's pretty even for player value, but then the salary skews the values a bit.
I don't do the trade if I'm Calgary, I'm undecided if I'm Toronto.

White versus Nylander
White is 9 months younger than Nylander, so White is two years behind Nylander because of age and his college commitment.
White is more a centre than winger, Nylander is more a winger than centre.
They are approx the same height and weight
Nylander plays for a high offence team. White plays for a low offence team, and just had a sophomore slump.

19/20 season
White 1.38 points per 60 minutes 5v5
Nylander 2.29 points per 60 minutes 5v5

White 2.94 hits per 60 minutes
Nylander 0.43 hits per 60 minutes

Nylander $6,962,366
White $4,750,000

Deal is pretty fair, two for one.
Ottawa might do the deal because they have so many centres and lack some skill, Toronto might do the deal because they have a lot of skill but lack some grit.

These trades aren't horrible.
The first one is lopsided, but after the 3rd is removed, it's pretty fair, but unlikely.
The second one is pretty fair, and might be accepted, maybe.
