Pommer would probably be a buyout, but the cap would be higher so kind of a moot point.

Tavares would be great pickup for the Wild, but they don't really have the roster to offer him a chance at the Cup in 2 years, and they don't have the hometown benefit. Plus I don't see the Isles's not resigning him.

Again stupid talk.... to suggest a team twould take on Pommiville to get to the cap floor. A thousand better ways to do it, just sign some good players.

I'm agreeing here. Pommer's contracts isn't one of the has a $5m cap hit but only costs $1m in real money that cheap/rebuilding teams sometimes pickup. To buyout his final year isn't too brutal for dead money (buyout after this season is brutal).

You know what I hear this argument alot and it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. How many big name free agents out of 10 want to sign with a rebuilding team? 1 maybe 2? You also have to take into consideration that just because you have the cap space doesn't men you get the players. MTL has been trying to throw boatloads of money at the first big name center in free agency for the past 10 years but not one wants to sign here.

Carolina for example will probably have a tough time signing bigger name free agents going forward because of their financial troubles and the threat of possible relocation too. We're lucky here in MTL and TO as we have plenty to offer players but some of the bottom dwellars aren't so lucky palhal.

Is Pominville overpaid? Of course he is. No one will sign him to that contract now but could a team looking to reach the cap floor use a veteran you can still produce in a limited role? Sure. Its 3 years at 5.6, maybe Minny even retains a bit of cash. That's not too bad. If you want a top 6 player in todays NHL, you have to pay 5M minimum for 6 years minimum. At least with Pominville your only getting 3 years and as bad as people have deemed him, he is not as bad as Clarkson in CLB or Brown LA. Pominville is still a good player, just not 5.6M good anymore.

Then there is this idea that you can just sign fifty guys at 1M each in order to boost your cap? Not really........Not unless you want to have no where to play those players or not have any rookies have space to play with the big club. Its only a 23 man roster and 50 contracts maximum so spots are limited.

I understand Pominville isn't that great and not worth 5.6M but this idea that it's so easy to just sign whoever, whenever and have an equally good team is not true. Signing 5 Adam Cracknells and Brian Flynns does not equal one Pominville. Quality UFA's are highly sought after and generally go to the more desirable teams. As mentioned above a team like Carolina doesn't have the luxury of just throwing money at free agents to getting them to come play for them.
