If TSN is right about Barkov

Created by: TheFlamingC
Team: 2020-21 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2021
Published: Jan. 14, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I’m skeptical but I also was about Dubois and he clearly wants out so they might be right. Barkov isn’t pushing his way out but apparently won’t resign. I don’t know. Just my offer in case TSN is right. Probably gonna take more

Nobody ever said he won't re-sign...
But this is an intriguing idea
I really hope he never gets traded tbh

I didn't say I think the Flames should do it, that's just what the price would be. Barkov is one of the 5 best centers in the league, still only 25 and has an INSANELY team friendly contract for the next 2 years. It will cost an absolute ransom for him.

Why would Barkov sign with Calgary?

5 best? Thats debatable. Hes below McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, and Draisaitl at least. Then Eichel, Malkin, and Matthews are at least on par with him. I am aware how good he is but thinking he returns Monahan (who has more career points than him), Andersson (Calgary's current #1), Zary (Calgary's most recent 1st rounder), and 2 1sts is absurd

Why would Hall sign with Buffalo? Because they offered him a contract

The 4 you named are above him, that makes him the 5th. I would argue he is better than every one of those other guys you listed, especially when you factor in how insanely good he is defensively.

As for the cost, I was being a little hyperbolic to make a point that he's going to cost more than he's actually worth, because he is insanely valuable and also, really, really freaking good.

No they didn't
They said that some gm's were skeptical that he would re-sign
That doesn't mean that he won't

I have argued many times in favor of Barkov when it comes to those other 3 also named for that #5 spot. But I will say that unless Barkov rebounds this year he is definitely behind them

you could argue top 10, but he's not top 5. Mc, Mack, Drai, Sid, AM34, Eichel, all better, just off the top of my head.

Austin Matthews and Eichel are better offensively, overall, they certainly are not. Neither of them are even in the same hemisphere, defensively, as Barkov.

Agree to disagree. Especially at the center position, the game is about more than just offense.

Auston Matthews is one of the better defensive centres in the league, and that statement is supported by both the eye test, basic stats, and advanced stats. He's not on Barkov's level defensively, but the difference between Matthews' overall and offensive impact and Barkov's > the difference between Barkov's defensive impact and Matthews'

Cause he wanted to play with Eichel so he can boost his stats to come for a bigger better contract next year. Even if he was coming off a poor year production wise Calgary wouldn't be the best team to boost his stats.

I am not saying Flames will get Barkov in 2 years but if Gaudreau walks they will be one of the few teams with the cap space for him

That’s not what it’s about. Calgary is a very good team that can make cap space to pay him

But you are moving Monahan, Zary, and a 1st? Regardless, with all of Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and Barkov ending in 2 years one of them probably wont be in Calgary and Tkachuk is not leaving

In 2 years Colorado and Vegas would also have cap space not to mention Vancouver.

Without Gaudreau and Gio are the Flames really an elite team though?

I don't know how Calgary could compete with a stacked Colorado team if his priority is winning. If his priority is money then re-signing in Florida with lower taxes would do that for him.

Not to mention most teams would make the cap space to sign a player like Barkov just like Vegas did for Pietrangelo.

?
Gio is 37, he wont be elite at 39. Flames have a plethora of promising young defensemen to replace him already. You should take a look at the list of players that are UFA's in 2022, it's a pretty strong group. Missing out on Barkov is not a big deal if you land any of the other big names

Sure Calgary could sign a good player but Barkov seems like a pipe dream.
