we don't need an 8th D, and especially not a left shot, and ideally wouldn't retain. it only makes sense to trade bennett if we bring in a RW capable of playing in our top 6

Why would you get a top 6 forward when you're trading a bottom 6 one?

He’d be your 5th best Dman immediately but I agree, Dermott is not what Calgary needs.

He’s not better than Valimaki and I’ve not been displeased with Nesterov so far honestly so I don’t think he’d crack the lineup. I consider him around Kylington’s level, but regardless yeah, we don’t need D depth, especially left shots (Mackey’s looked good as well, he’ll get a shot this year at some point imo).

Well right now Simon and Leivo are getting top 6 time consistently so the standard isn’t exactly high lol. If we swap him for Virtanen straight up in a change of scenery thing he would probably slot in next to Gaudreau and Monahan to try and get a physical presence with a decent shot there, even if he should probably be a 3rd liner based on skill level. Alternatively we could look at adding him to a package for a better RW like RikRak

Fair enough. The Virtanen swap makes so much sense, they have almost mirrored careers. Both teams hoping the "change of scenery" works for them.

I’m just being honest... he’s better than valimaki and nesterov right now. He would actually put pressure on hanifin to be better. Don’t let the taxi squad fool you, Dermott has been great. They just rotate lehtonen in to keep them competing and get lehtonen some experience.

Brutal trade for the Leafs.. There isn't a spot for the Bennett in the Leaf lineup. Leafs need all their NHL Dmen, not giving them away. Also for expansion reasons, Dermot is needed.

Dermott is not needed for the Seattle draft... Kerfoot and that cap hit is more desirable piece to lose to them.

I'll disagree, Leaf need that third line centre which is Kerfoot. Dermot and Holl get exposed and one of them is taken.

What does kerfoot bring to the lineup that any cheaper dime-a-dozen 3rd center cant bring??? Nothing thats what! Leafs could replace Kerfoot with Engvall or Brooks or some waiver wire pickup and thered be no difference in what that line brings to the table. Whereas the low cost Holl appears to be fitting in well with Muzzin...

The danger is if Tavares or Matthews ever gets hurt, Brooks and Engvall aren't the guys to play big minutes offensively. Now I hope Holl isn't selected as the Leafs (and every NHL team) don't have enough RHD, but plenty of LHD.

Kerfoot doesnt bring any offense. If Tavares got injured theyd be better off with Nylander as a 2C. Bottom line is at 3+ million per Kerfoot is not worth it... can get checking centers for a lot less.

The question to ask is whod be harder to replace (and what they bring to the position theyre at... Kerfoot at 3C or Holl at 2RD?
