Most games played ever, in the history of the sport, will be enough to get him in, imo. And deservedly so; that's an incredibly significant accomplishment. It's not like he was some bum who just happened to play a lot. He was a very good player, who will hold an extremely notable record if all goes well.

Why is Getzlaf 'very-likely' and Staal only a 'fringe' candidate?

Both only have a single cup win each.

Staal is clearly the better player, so why again is Getzlaf... more likely.

Both are over a point/game players @ 1.09 for RG & 1.22 for ES.

However, Getz has about twice the hockey hardware of Staal...

at the current PPG pace Getzlaf would have 1,140 points if he played the same number of games as Staal...Getzlaf also has 2 OGM, 1 WJC, and 1 WCup

I never said Staal was way better, I said he was clearly better by those numbers, or at least that was my intention.

If Getzlaf stays in the league that long, then yes, I'll freely state Getzlaf is the better player and more deserving of the two. But until that happens Staal to me deserves to be considered the better player. Getzlaf is only a year younger than Staal, and would roughly have to play another 3 seasons at a full 82 game pace to overtake him in games played.

That's a pretty tall order if you ask me. Just saying.
