I would only trade him in a package for something we need; we're in no rush to move him at all. I would package him for a legit top 9 quality wing/center, but I wouldn't trade him for a fringe 4th liner.

You're in no rush to move him until he becomes a disgruntled asset because the Leafs have 8 NHL defencemen and his development is being stunted.

well if he gets that bad then we trade him for something like this but as of right now he gets more reps on that 3rd pair than anyone so he should be the last one to get disgruntled.

edit: You changed it from Mackewen to Gaudette. That's better.

What about Dermott + Engvall for Gaudette + Rafferty ? Maybe have to balance out with picks a bit

From a Canucks stand-point I think they should definitely do that

Right now he's a decent bottom-pairing defenceman who can move the puck but lacks great mobility. He's faired well so far but in a very limited role and in only 8 games so it's hard to say what he'll become. In my eyes, he could become the successor to Alex Edler as a solid skilled second pairing defenceman who can be deployed in all situations.

Leafs deal is right around proper value. Canucks likely add a late round pick (maybe a 5th) and it's a good deal. Dermott is better and more valuable, but there's a good chance he's left exposed to Seattle so getting a top 9 forward helps with not losing someone for free.

Bruins deal isn't bad, but they're thin on defence so I can't see them moving someone off their roster for Virtanen. But he'd be a good fit in Boston.

Dermott was banged up from that hit from Motte. He's only sat 2 games previous to the injury. He's far from a disgruntled asset.
