leafs after expansion draft

Created by: winthecup
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Protect 4D and the big 4 F in the expansion draft. Seattle takes Kerfoot.

Cut the spend in net, let Anderson walk and get a solid tandem going with Campbell + a UFA with upside (e.g. Driedger).

Resign Hyman after the expansion draft at 6x$4.5m.

Depth at C is a little weak here, but Boyd has looked good and likely costs much less than other UFA options. I'd rather spend to bring back Simmonds and maybe Bogosian too for D depth. Go after a 3C upgrade at the trade deadline if needed.

Would be shocked if Seattle took Kerfoot

Due to cap, there are going to be more, high-salary vets left unprotected than we expect. They'll take the better ones, so hitting cap floor not as much of an issue.

Great idea! Should we trade Engvall for McDavid too??

So they'll take Dermott instead in this scenario? Or Joey Anderson? I'm ok with any of these outcomes, which is why I think the leafs go with the 4/4 protection option instead of 7/3. If Dermott goes then they can likely bring back Lehtonen, and give Sandin more opportunity. They're covered either way.

Yeah, I'd think Dermott most likely...maybe Anderson (although would love to see NJD acquire him back).

Bang-on comment.

Is that Scott Niedermeyer? I remember that he wore number 27 when he came over to us.

Next to Denis Potvin, whose entire career I was fortunate to see, Scott was the best defenseman I ever watched. People always talked about Paul Coffey being better than Niedermeyer, but Coffey was nothing without Kevin Lowe and couldn't lace Niedermeyer's skates.

So good

(although considering his history, I don't know that a leafs ACGM is best place to discuss Neidermayer).

Ottawa declines. They're better off keeping a spot open for Formenton or Abramov or any number of wingers that teams will need to put through waivers or dump in order to meet next seasons frozen cap.
