How does that Avs trade help a contender? It makes them worse.

I dunno about that. Backes at #3C wouldn't be so bad and with retention we could easily take the cap hit. Plus a probably high second round pick. De Leo has little value in the trade though. Calvert isn't a guy I'd want to move though but it's not an awful idea.

He's only played 10 games this year and has regressed significantly. That and he just cleared waivers two days ago (https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/03/jack-johnson-david-backes-placed-on-waivers.html). We're basically trading Calvert for a 2nd round pick, which doesn't make sense. Calvert's carrying that fourth line right now since Belly has been a black hole for any offense

As I said, I wouldn't want to trade Calvert as he's important for the lower lines. A second rounder for Calvert would actually be more than fair as value though. IF Backes could do the job at #3C it wouldn't be an unfair trade, though I'd probably want something better than De Leo for the risk. This also has retention which you wouldn't get on the waiver. It's not bad, not great, but would definitely depend on whether or not Backes could fill that #3C role. If they threw in Miller at 50% retained instead of De Leo and took some kind of prospect instead of Calvert it would help both teams, but again IF Backes could fill the #3C spot.
