Description
Just curious of everyone's thoughts on why Vrana is STILL getting less than 15 minutes per game. I would have expected his TOI to be up around 18 by now. If my math is correct, at 20 mpg he would be a point per game player. I understand Ovi is ahead of him on the depth chart, but under 15 mpg seems really low, especially with him getting time on the pp1.

Also, what are your thoughts on how much he will resign for and term of contract. I'm thinking 4.5 mil per, for 3 years.

His ice time is low because Lavy doesn't really trust him in defensive situations in the third period when the Caps get a lead. I'd love to see V get more ice time.

He is the perfect example of why advanced stats are so over rated. He looks great in Corsi, Fenwick AND PDO...but still is considered a liability on defense. Also, the fact that 3 different coaches have kept him under 15 MPG might say a lot.

Because some coaches make dumb decisions. He should be getting way more minutes and double shifted. But o well, at least it will keep his AAV down lol Before the the season began I was thinking they would finally give him the minute he deserves so he would tear it up and get $7MM a year. Don't think that happens now. Probably closer to $6M.

Well, it's important to consider context in conjunction with advanced stats. Vrana and Kuznetsov are having good years in possession metrics, but they're also getting sheltered minutes, with extremely high percent offensive zone starts. I don't know if that's all Lavy not trusting the younger guys defensively, or if he's truly trying to maximize their scoring ability. Maybe both?

Agreed with taking advanced stats in context. Kuzy to me IS a liability defensively. For a guy that is supposed to be an "elite" center, he has a lot of holes in his game. Can't trust him at the dot, so defensive zone starts are a no go AND his offensive production has been trending down each year since the cup. I LOVE what he did for the Caps during the cup run, but it seems like he got paid and started coasting.

If Vrana would sign 4.5Mx3, that would be a great deal for the team, but I doubt they'll offer him anything below about 5x5, even under a flat cap. Maybe 6 if he goes max term. He scores a lot of goals.

I doubt Vrana would take max term until after Ovi retires. If he is smart, he will try and get a 3 - 4 year bridge deal at a reasonable price and then get 1st line money after Ovi leaves. Agreed...4.5 mil per year might be a little low, but again he is only playing 15 mpg.

How cool would it be if he signed for 5Mx8? The team gets under the cap next year somehow, and it gets a cheap 1LW for the first four years post-Ovechkin. Vrana gets $40M. Everybody wins.

I don't think Vrana's agent would let that happen. wink
