The Eichel Ransom Part One

Created by: kinghv93
Team: 2021-22 Vegas Golden Knights
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 24, 2021
Published: Mar. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
They want 4 first round caliber players, picks, or prospects, but Vegas can possibly get Eichel (and shoot themselves in the foot) by giving up 3 instead. The more I’ve played with this, the more obvious it’s become that Vegas should not make a play for Jack Eichel. Sure, the top six gets better and the money works out, but it honestly looks like a lateral move for Vegas

How much I love the trade, Vegas wouldn't do it, niether would Buffalo, they will get rid of them, just with a bigger name

I highly doubt Vegas looks to move Theodore at all. Moving him makes them incredibly thin at LD. I also don't think Tuch would be moved for Eichel. Not that Buffalo wouldn't be interested in him, but Tuch and Eichel played on a line in college and it sky rocketed Tuch play and value. I could see Vegas reuniting the 2 of them on a line to try to get the best of Tuch's low contract value.

I think a deal likely starts with Cody Glass (not negotiable), then likely includes Fleury for cap reasons, then go where you want with it. Likely at least a couple 1st round picks if Buffalo is rebuilding, then it really depends where Buffalo sees their main organizational weakness at. But I think younger, less proven guys are their target, not guys like Tuch or Theodore.

Trade Fleury for a first and a prospect. Trade that first, Vegas' first, Krebs, and Glass for Eichel

I was just trying to find a way to make the money work in terms of acquiring Eichel. Fleury likely puts Buffalo on his no trade list, so maybe Vegas deals him to an “acceptable team” for a pick or prospect that they can use in the Eichel deal. Even though Eichel will still be an amazing player, giving up the top prospects for him when the team is up against the cap ceiling spells trouble when other guys in the top 6 start hitting free agency or regressing. It’s nice to have talented youth ready for when that day comes. Ironically, Vegas would be undertaking a major gamble here

This at least gets Buffalo’s attention. It opens up a discussion of whether it’s better to take good quality players now to start reversing the losing culture as soon as possible, or get all the prospects and picks.

Personally, if I am a buffalo fan, and my team trades our franchise’s best player in decades for “futures” and the return is nothing like the Lindros trade or, more realistically, the Duchene trade, they’ve lost me. I would fear that the Sabres maintain a losing culture and ruin top prospects much like the Oilers kind of did just before they drafted their lord and savior Connor McDavid

Easier said than done. At most, there are 5 suitors for Fleury; any others than need him desperately are losing teams that likely end up on his no trade list (Buffalo, Detroit are good examples). Maybe they get a prospect and a roster player in return, or they have to retain salary to get a first rounder, but I can’t see them getting both for a 35+ year old goalie
