Bridging the gap

Created by: MartysBetter29
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not super realistic but I would be happy with this roster as a bridge between bottoming out and setting up for a hopefully competitive future. Use cap space as an asset in the immediate while keeping room open in the future. Would expect this team to compete for a low end playoff spot in the East.

Offer sheet:
I know the classic line is "offer sheets never actually happen" and historically it is true. But that's because the speculation is usually about an elite player like Marner where the team will match no matter what or a nothing player where it's not even worthwhile. I think this is a particular case where it could happen, albeit only if the Devils are as sold on Foote as a very good top 4 defenseman as I am. The whole point is that the contract is an overpay for where Foote is right now. He is valuable to Tampa but they have to be projecting him as a sub-2M$ cap hit to play a middle or bottom pair role. An offer almost double that puts them in some serious trouble. They could match but then they're in major cap hell and will likely have to move an even bigger piece like Cernak or Sergachev. They may respond by trying to facilitate a Foote trade instead which I'd be open to. Or they may have to angrily suck it up, spite the Devils, let him go and look for a veteran UFA defenseman to fill the bottom pair and chase another cup. Have to imagine Cal would be willing to sign since the deal is above market value and would allow him the chance (again) to play with his brother.

Trade explanations:
VGK- It is no secret Vegas needs to shed salary. They were confirmed shopping Pacioretty before the season and they may well have to move him this offseason. Here they shed nearly 6M in cap space and get a really solid player in Miles Wood back since they still want to compete. Devils get a real goal scorer and veteran leadership and a 2nd rounder to make up for the huge cap dump.
FLA- I really hope Aaron Ekblad is ok. But it seems like he may be out for some period of time. Florida has been really good this year but their d-corps leaves much to be desired and without Ekblad it might be bad enough to tank their season. Subban has gained attention for his good play this year and Kulikov has quietly been the Devils most steady defenseman. Both of them really help stabilize that D and the 1st rounder should be a bottom 10 pick if Florida wins a series. The high value pick accounts for major retention on both contracts.
SJS- Only happens if they are going full rebuild. I buy Meier as a legit top 6 player. This year he's been a bit meh from what I've seen but he's on a bad team. Sharks get a 1st rounder, an NHL ready prospect in Sharangovich who has been really good and could be a Meier lite replacement with his shot and probably our highest potential D prospect. If the Devils draft a defenseman this year (I projected Power here) it would be wise to move Mouk, Walsh, or Bahl for an area of greater need. Goal scoring is a need so Meier takes that spot. Also unite the 2 Swiss kings.
Islanders- Lou gets what Lou wants. I have to think he is interested in Palmieri. Islanders are in win-now mode and Lou ain't going to be GM many more years so I have to imagine he will go for it even if it involves leveraging the future. Would take a year to see who wins the trade since the 1st is 2022. In a deep draft if the Islanders have a bad year next year and its in the 5-15 range that is a win for NJ. If they are good as expected and its 20+ it is closer to a swap with the Devils 2021 2nd which will probably be mid 30s. Bit of a nuanced trade could go either way.
Butcher- eh, kind of meaningless. Doesn't have to be Boston but I know they could probably use a D. Will Butcher is worthy of NHL playing time and if a team will put him on the PP he could easily rack up points. Just don't see a future for him in NJ.

Isles aren’t giving up a 2022 1st for a rental. Lou isn’t that out of touch.

Ive seen the man do some pretty crazy things. End of his time in NJ was rough. Worth it tho for the good years.

I am not a fan of Lou , but In a buyers market it’s highly unlikely he’s going to give a 2022 1st for a player who’s having a down year. Maybe if you included bratt, but just for palmieri? Two 2nds is the most I can see him giving up.

Assuming he is healthy, Bruins probably accept . That being said, Bruins would prefer a Palmieri trade.

What...in the holy rock....is that San Jose trade?
I cannot see any circumstances where the Devils trade Sharangovich. (Unless it is to get #1 dman).
This package should return Hertl and Meier.

I like the logic of the foote deal however like you said offer sheets very rarely happen and im not sure the devils would want to create bad blood with tampa. My feeling is that pacioretty would be more expensive and palmieri would get less of a return but who knows. The deal for meier might be what is required to get him but i wouldnt do it because i feel like shakir, yegor and a late first (which is probably what the isles pick will be) will develop to be better than meier but i could see meier being fantastic as well.

This is all over the place man. VGK trade is lopsided in value, that pick should be going the other way. There’s not a chance Subban brings back a 1st. Don’t think NJ should be adding picks onto selling trades like the Palms deal. SJ deal is very hefty and I personally don’t think Meier is worth it. Also, Crawford?

Ok so I'll admit....I could be way off here. All I know about Meier is hes scored 30, hes 24 and under RFA team control, and Sharks fans seem to hold him in very high regard. On the surface those seem to indicate a very valuable player but I honestly haven't seen enough of him with my own eyes to feel confident. As for the return: Islanders pick would likely be low like 20-30. I am personally low on Moukhamadoulin but I can see how the team might not be. And I love Sharangovich but if he can get value he seems to be somewhat expendable. Holtz and Mercer coming up the pipeline at RW and our centers are all set so theres really no way he can end up in our top 6. I think that some combination of Kuokkanen, Bastian, McLeod, Boqvist Thompson, Clarke, Merkley, Maltsev, etc. could fill out the bottom 6 just fine and it is not hard to sign a bottom 6 vet in free agency if needed. Thats just my line of thinking but like I said I could definitely be way off. Also if you seriously think that could return Hertl and Meier I would do it in a heartbeat.

I am probably overshooting my skies on both Hertl/Meier...

But I view Sharangovich has probably even swap with Meier.
Or Mukhammadullin plus 1st as fair for Meier.

I see where you're coming from and like I said in the description this isn't super realistic its very armchair gmish all over the place. But Ill give you my thought process in response to the criticisms.
VGK trade isn't about player for player. It is about Vegas not being able to get under the cap ceiling with their current situation. Before this season some legit hockey analysts were reporting VGK was shopping Pacioretty at a low value. Possibly even attatching a pick to get a team to eat the full contract. I think that is a bit extreme but it is an example of how they need to move him at a lower cost. In this deal they trade him for a player who plays the same position, is 7 years younger, leads his (bad) team in goals, is a tough playoff type player and (most importantly) would cost 6M less against the cap with retention. I don't see VGK getting a much better deal for a cap dump than that tbh.
Subban is not worth a 1st you're right. But theres a lot more to that deal than just Subban=1st round pick. He is retained at 50% which is a lot for a team sending a player away to take on. And Kulikov (also retained) has legitimately been the most reliable Devils defenseman and has ties to Florida. This may be the Panthers best chance to go for it with the way their team is playing and the weird divisional playoff format. This is giving them a very solid entire 2nd pairing which they need. If they finish high and that 1st rounder is picks 20-32 I think its a wortwhile investment.
See where you're coming from on Palmieri deal I just think it is balancing value to get a 1st rounder kind of like the Goodrow trade a couple years ago for SJS. Personally I'd be willing to give up a 2nd to get a 1st but if you'd rather get a flat 2nd or a 2nd and 3rd or something I wont argue that.
Meier deal: yeah that one is a bit all over the place. I like Meier but might be overvaluing. No argument there.
And you caught my Crawford addition lol. Did that 90% joking. Theres a small part of me that wonders if he might get the itch and finish what he started in NJ since his retirement is apparently not injury related. But that is totally his business and I just added him to see if anyone would notice haha.

Would do either of those. Certainly not rooting against Sharangovich, he has been really good this year and if he can become the top 6 winger that I think Meier is I would be thrilled.

I think Sharangovich's long-term position will be center - and specifically 3c for NJD.
Just has to figure out faceoffs, which is why he was originally paired with Zajac, who has been taking faceoffs but playing more RW.
Zacha has shown more offense at wing - and can play either side - and Mcleod fitting in well as 4c.

I really hope when Nico is back Ruff gives Zacha another look on his wing. I like him better at wing than center as well.
