It really can't be understated how much better this blue line is now compared to 48 hours ago. They got rid of so much dead weight (and Mike Reilly) and made room for young guys to take over.

I really think Erik Brannstrom playing with Artyom Zub is exactly what he needs to really elevate his play down the stretch. It seems like a perfect combination, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him really take off offensively the rest of the way. Gonna be getting a real opportunity in the top 4.

I also really like Mete with Bernard-Docker. Mete has taken a step back, but he had some pretty solid defensive metrics in the past, and if he can find that again, he'll be a great fit for JBD. Both can skate, move the puck and contribute away from the puck.

They're better off keeping him than trading him just to trade him. LeBrun mentioned that there wasn't a big market there. I think you keep him down the stretch and try and work out a reasonable 2 year deal. He's a good pro who plays well, has a really good attitude and seems to want to be a Senator. It's just a good fit. It's like putting on an old sweater during the winter.

I’m still considering not moving him a loss IF he doesn’t re-sign. If he does sign back, then I’m good with the move

He really wasn't going to get much return. If he re-signs I'll be happy, if he doesn't he can be replaced, not the end of the world (looking at you Formenton). Keep in mind we didn't give up anything to get him. It was a cap dump for cap dump but also a bit of a hockey trade as Paquette would be more valuable to Carolina and Dzingel more valuable for Ottawa. But no real assets going either way

Fair, but realistically, they aren't leaving much on the table. For the cost of not getting a pick in rounds 4-7, I'm totally fine with getting the extra few months to try and work out a deal. Even if he walks you still got from him for free (Galchenyuk was a free agent signing and Paquette was a cap dump) and he gave you what you were hoping to get from both of those guys separately any way (depth scoring and Veteran leadership).
