Description
Assumes Copp will accept an Ehlers-like deal, and that Pionk would stay a little bit under Morrissey. (Is this reasonable to expect, though? Copp could see offer sheets up to 6.5 if they don't sign him up before free agency?)

I think its likely that Brossoit is lured away with some extra money and term than the Jets might not want to spend in that position, hence the trade for Kinkaid- he is cheap, and on a relatively strong defensive team he should be serviceable as a backup.

Helm and Sutter both likely willing to take short term on a contender at their age. Weal is fairly versatile, making him useful as a plug in my books.

These short deals should allow space to negotiate with PLD, Niku, and Vesalainen the following off-season.

I’m not sure where you’re getting the 6 million number for Copp. That’s absurd. He’s looking at 4-4.5 million.

Pionk likely takes like an 7 or 8 year deal at 5.5 million. They’d just bring up berdin if brossoit leaves in FA. Little likely is on LTIR. Perreault will get under 2 million. I don’t mind bringing helm and sutter in for cheap though.

Pretty big year for Copp, not too far short of Ehlers, granted coming a bit later in his career as well. 4.5M seems like the low end for sure, other teams will definitely be sniffing around. I have no doubt the player wants to stay, but agents be agents.

His agent is a stickler. They filed for arbitration last year, might do it again. Copp has had 1 good season, besides this year he’s never even broken 30 pts. So no, he’s not even getting close to what Ehlers is making. Teams can OS him for 4.4-6.5 for all I care, I’ll take their 1st and 3rd for Copp. Only way Jets manage to keep him is if he wants to stay, (arb last year makes him seem like a bit of a pain to negotiate with) and he’ll take a reasonable amount around 4.25m.

If he had like 5 45+ Pt seasons then I’d consider maybe 5m because of the defensive game he brings, but you don’t pay a guy who’s never scored 20 goals, or had 50 pts once over 4.5 million.

    Evolving Hockey's updated contract projections:
    Copp at 4 x $5.093 million (29% chance)
    Pionk at 4 x $5.976 million (34% chance) or 7 x $6.418 million (26% chance)

If you want to replace Brossoit with a different backup, pick a better one than Kinkaid who has had sub-.900 save percentages over the past three seasons.

The year Ehlers signed @6M he had two season at 0.75 points/game ... I would say at his current production, Ehlers is a bit underpaid by league standards.

Copp has 0.75 per game this year, and half a point per game the previous season. You combine the potential interest of other teams, and a bit of cap inflation since Ehlers signed... I think you are looking at 5-5.5m all day. 6M gets it done before free agency.

It would be great to keep Brossoit, but I can see him being offered over 2M with medium term, and I am not sure Jets would pay up to keep him. Kinkaid is more of a third goalie I guess, they probably have some prospect who could come up, but you don't want a valuable prospect playing backup to Hellebuyck all season either.

Kinkaid been play on pretty porous teams past several seasons too.

They’ll qualify Copp and let him get OS’d before they pay over 5 million.

I get what you’re saying. He’s always been under .5 PPG in his career, 1 good year doesn’t get you paid that much.

We can agree to disagree though, because I think it’s pretty obvious, and feel like most other fans would agree that there’s 0 chance Jets will be giving Copp over 4.5 million. They’ll qualify and trade him before they give him 5 and above.

I doubt Brossoit could get a significant raise beyond what he is making now with a minimal increase in term. Kinkaid is 31 years old and has regressed over the past 3 seasons and is unlikely to improve as he has hit his ceiling. Last time I checked the Jets were miserable defensively so Kinkaid is not likely to succeed. An organization's third goalie (in normal times) is the starter in the AHL and I wouldn't want to hinder the development of Berdin for a scrub in Kinkaid.

Copp never had a half point per game season before this one which has him at a 60 point pace over an 82 game schedule, would be crazy to pay him $6M based on this wierd season, he could just as easily be back to being a 25-30 point guy next season, I'd be weary about giving him $4M to be honest.
