Eichels NOT The Sabre Were Looking For

Created by: PuckLuck_77
Team: 2021-22 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2021
Published: May 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sam Reinhart is the player that fits the needs of LA, much more so than Eichel. Is there a trade to be made here? And is it less than just offer sheeting the guy 7mil with the pitch of LA vs Buffalo (and all that entails -- organizational stability, weather, top-tier prospects coming up, etc)?

What's a trade for Reinhart have to include?

If I was LA, I would put Byfield in a deal for Eichel without hesitation.

My point is simply that a center isn't what addresses the needs of the organization. A scoring right winger? Much more in line with what the Kings need, and they could do it without trading away their prized prospects. And if it was a trade, it wouldn't cost NEARLY what Eichel would. You might be willing to give up Byfield, but LA is certainly not.

Jack Eichel is who the team hopes QB becomes one day, and we'll be lucky if he hits that ceiling. He is exactly the Sabre that we're looking for.

Let me be clear, I DON'T THINK WE COULD PULL IT OFF, but to go Eichel-Kopitar-QB down the middle is elite. Even if it means giving up Kupari,Kempe,Turcotte+Pick++, that's instant relevance.

Reinhart @7for6 is worse than the Lucic contract we luckily avoided. Way too much to pay, especially when the team clearly needs to add at the defensive end (Matta failed experiment), instead of the front (all the prospect depth in the world).

Fair points, and an understandable point of view even if I don't agree. The Kings center depth is already set to be elite with QB, Vilardi, Turcotte, and Kopitar. Yes, QB may or may not hit the same talent level that Eichal has hit in the past (before injuries, which caused a lost season). But trading for him with the pieces that you're talking about is getting rid of the support those three need on their wings or throughout the rest of the lineup.

I don't think Reinhart and Lucic can even be mentioned in the same conversation, unless you're talking about how their games are opposite. Lucic's contract that we avoided was a boat anchor because the style of game the NHL was trending to was passing him by. Reinhart has proven to be a consistent 20+ goal scorer that is directly in the age-range the Kings organization has stated they are looking to fill (25-27 years old to bridge the gap between the star vets and the up-and-coming prospects). On top of that, Reinhart would be significantly cheaper than Eichel, both now and in the long run.

As far as the defense vs forward spots, I agree there's a hole to be filled at 3LD. Maatta failed at 1LD and has become an okay-ish placeholder for that bottom pair. But I'm really liking what I see out of Toby and Mikey. It depends on what happens with the draft lottery this year, as I think the Kings would love to be able to get one of Power/Hughes/Edvinsson.

I'm not sure why you think Maatta was a failure or an experiment. He was brought in for exactly two reasons:

1. To provide a veteran presence on the left side of the blueline so LA didn't have 3 LHD rookies in the lineup at the same time.
and
2. To satisfy the expansion draft exposure requirement so that LA wasn't forced to expose one of Walker or Roy to Seattle.

He has done both of those things. After the expansion draft he'll have served his purpose and will likely be traded or put on waivers.

I don't agree with the point that centers need winger support. Good centers make their wingers; that's what makes them a good center.

I'm not a believer in Turcotte; that is my personal bias.

Point taken about Reinhart.

Yeah, I completely agree with your point. I feel like with the KIngs center depth, Eichel is more of a want, rather than a need. The Kings already have Quinton Byfield, Turcotte, Kopitar, Vilardi, plus more center prospects in Akil Thomas and Rasmus Kupari. Although they probably won't become Eichel, they're still a really good group of centers. Honestly, if I were you guys, I'd try to get a good defenseman or a winger.

I tried to make a trade for reinhart yesterday and had no clue what to give up. I’d put him 1RW
