Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Bastian, Nathan [RFA Rights]
  2. 2021 4th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Schmidt, Nate
Additional Details:
Mutually beneficial trade as the Devils get a dman that they can protect alongside Severson while the Canucks upgrade their bottom six while shedding cap
2.
VAN
  1. Foegele, Warren [RFA Rights]
CAR
  1. Lind, Kole [RFA Rights]
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Foegele is a prime candidate to get selected in expansion and could also benefit from a change of scenery. With the emergence of Geekie and Lorentz it allows the Canes to move Foegele.
3.
VAN
  1. Lauzon, Jérémy
Additional Details:
Lauzon is the likely candidate to get selected in the expansion draft so Boston likely looks to move him instead of letting him walk for nothing. Lauzon adds some much needed toughness for the Canucks and the ability to penalty kill with the Canucks likely moving on from Edler.
BOS
  1. 2021 2nd round pick (VAN)
4.
VAN
  1. Robinson, Eric
Additional Details:
With Robinson likely to get selected by Seattle in the expansion draft, they flip him for a dman in Juolevi. This trade makes more sense if Columbus decides to trade Seth Jones because that would allow them to protect Juolevi along with Werenski and Gavrikov. Robinson gives Vancouver speed in the bottom six and a cheap contract.
CBJ
  1. Juolevi, Olli [RFA Rights]
  2. 2021 5th round pick (VAN)
5.
VAN
SEA
  1. Roussel, Antoine
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Vancouver sends a 2nd in 22' to Seattle to take on the final year of Roussel which allows them to protect Gadjovich.
6.
VAN
  1. 2021 5th round pick (NYR)
NYR
  1. MacEwen, Zack
Additional Details:
After the departure of Lemieux, the Rangers look to add toughness. MacEwen fell out of favour with Travis Green this year so this trade makes sense for both teams.

There's a pick going the other way to NJD, not to Vancouver.

Definitely not. Schmidt is a top four dman and Bastian hasn't proved enough in the NHL and likely won't be protected.

Would the Canucks be willing to swap Bastian for Merkley?

Why would Seattle take Foegele when Skjei will be exposed? Carolina have no reason to trade Foegele

I think Bastian represents more of what we are trying to build in our bottom six

He doesn't play center though. Merkley is a center

Seattle likely isn't going to be competetive right away and the Skjei contract has potential to be ugly in a few years. A cheaper Foegele makes much more sense from a Seattle perspective

Bastian played centre in the minors. I'm sure he could step in as a 4C.

Schmidt is a 30-year old coming off from an objectively bad season with a 6 million cap hit attached. Benning is basically dumping cap for free here and there are better Dmen to target like Dunn, Bean, Dumba etc.

Why wouldn't BOS just cut out the Canuckle-middle man and a) give the second to the Starbucks and b) pkg a prospect/pick or bottom six to keep them off Lauzon...done

“Trade Lauzon so you don’t lose him”. Umm if i trade him…i lost him, and i lose another player to Seattle too. 🙄

I’d rather not lose two players because of the expansion draft. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That would be pretty dumb. Good thing you aren’t a GM. Trade Lauzon for basically nothing and then Seattle takes Zboril and I have lost a 3rd of my D. Or Frederic. Rather deal with Seattle so they don’t take him or just let them take who they take and deal with the repercussions. That’s what the smart GM does.

As a GM on a contender losing 2 regulars and only getting a mediocre pick in a weak draft to show for it is piss poor asset management.

Going to lose someone for nothing regardless, why compound the problem.

Always been a winger. In OHL, AHL and NHL.
Not a center.

Also, Canucks gotta eat some salary to make work.
Wasn't a $6m d-man this year.

The thing is you're not giving up Bastian and a 4th for Dunn, Dumba, and Bean. Schmidt could possibly be the best bang for your buck out on the market. Also everyone on the Canucks had a bad season. I wouldn't look too much into player results for anyone on their team.
