how to actually rebuild the leafs

Created by: Sad_Siegs
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2021
Published: Jun. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bascially the point of this retool is to create cap, add more grit and add more "fire" to your team. Tavares trade is something that needed to happen he has a huge cap hit and isnt worth it, he has a NMC but if you threaten to buy him out or trade him to a contender he will probably waive it. Reilly really isnt that amazing any more, letting him go for a young guentzel is a good trade. Brought back some of the old leaders, really there for support. Trent frederick and simmons give good grit. I like swayman with campbell, and the defence is much improved and younger.

So ya none of this is "how to rebuild the Leafs" more like how give Boston more prominence while depleting the Leafs organization. Swayman trade brings back Raycroft nightmares, Rielly is still a top pair D man none of that changed he played just fine if not great in that series, Brodie literally can't play the left side, and Craig Smith at 2 C is entering Thorton age player

If you think anyone is taking Tavares' and that contract you're kidding yourself.

You need to add a 1st+ to that Guentzel trade.

maybe the first is alittle bit of an overpayment, but boston has been known to try to get players at all costs, therefore i think that getting a second top 20 center would be very appealing to them. They also alreay have 2 goalies and frederick isnt that great of a prospect just kind of a grinder grit player. Carlo is good but he is at best a second pairing defender.

Well there needs to be an actual shakeup for the leafs, moving around your bottom six wont fix problems. The raycroft situation is different than this and no goalie is going back to Bos. Reilly struggled heavily this season and is on the last year of his deal, personally i dont think its worth it to have him leave at the end of the season for nothing. Brodie can change sides, Craig smith might be old but he is very productive right now and only has 2 years on his deal.

I think he would, less tax better team. He would escpecailly waive it if you said that he would never rejoin the leafs (buyout).

Boston and the avalanche are always in the hunt for random players to overpay for, both of them tried to sign tavares for more money a couple years ago. Allthough i dont think its a good contract, i do think hes a good player and has good value.

Teams were in on Tavares a few years ago. The huge decline in his skating since then should scare everyone off. He won't be able to produce on his own for much longer.

Tavares skates the exact same as he did when he signed that deal, Also advanced stats show he is still a top 20 center. The only thing that could potentially scare teams off is his contract. Once again you dont know what your talking about

Speed has dropped off significantly looking at the ice tracking metrics.

He also ranked 60th in xG% and his OZS% was higher than his xG% meaning he's losing more shifts than he is winning at ES... he has merit to be an NHLer, that's not what I'm trying to say... he is however grossly overpaid for what he actually brings to the table

OZS% is the amount of times his shift started in the offensive zone.... He is a top 20 center by all advanced stats mertics, you are probably biased if you say otherwise
