Description
Thirty-two years ago, a relatively unknown blueliner named Tom Kurvers was 9th among defensemen in scoring in the 1988-89 season for the NJ Devils. On October 16, 1989, at the beginning of the 1989-1990 season, Kurvers was traded to the Toronto Maples for a future 1st round pick in 1991.

The 1989-90 Leafs at the time had a young, promising team (Wendel Clark, Vincent Damphousse, Eddy Olczyk, Al Iafrate, Dave Reid, Luke Richardson, Rob Ramage, etc) and were in contention after 10 straight losing seasons.

But in the following season, the Leafs spent most of the season at the bottom of the league, projected to finished dead last. This was setting the NJD nicely with their pick for 1st overall in the 1991 draft (Eric Lindros draft). So to avoid that scenario, the Leafs made a trade with the Quebec Nordiques, then in 2nd to last place, to acquire three of the best Nordiques veterans for prospects and picks. This allowed the Leafs to crawl out of the basement of standings, but ensured Quebec would tank until the end of 1991.

The rest is history. Quebec selected Eric Lindros 1st overall in the 1991 draft. Lindros sat out a year and was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Flyers (for Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon and others).

The 1991 Leafs pick, held by NJD, was third overall and used to select Scott Neidermayer.

-------

Today, PK Subban is likely the closest we have to Tom Kurvers today. Leafs would acquire him at half price to play 2RD and help them return their power play to half of league.

hindsight is 20/20 but kurvers did have a 65-point season with 16 goals before he got dealt to toronto

i'd be tickled pink is subban was able to do that this season

I don't see a bottom five finish for Toronto next year. Or Subban being the guy who gets a 1st this summer. Severson, maybe? To a team that made the playoffs and loses a defenseman in expansion?
palhal liked this.

Problem is a club isn't really a club if it can only get a single member.

Fans wonder why the Leafs gave been so middling to poor for long period during the 50 plus years, this trade is an example.

Poor ownership and the worse GMs possible. I know I have missed a few of the GMs...but Floyd Smith, Gord Stellick, John Brophy, Pat Quinn, John Ferguson Jr, Brian Burke, and Dave Nonis. Some many want to include Dubas.

That's the problem. He's not healthy. He has played a full-season worth of games (including last year which I'll give 68 as a "full-season") twice in the last six seasons. I'm generally really interested in Subban on Toronto, but it would be double-retained (with DET or OTT or some other team) and no way at the cost of a 1st. Now, as part of a bigger deal... Well, I like Wood, Zacha, and other pieces in NJD.

Subban is healthy. He has had one injury in last 4 seasons.

2017-18: Played all 82 games (finished 3rd in Norris voting)
2018-19: Missed 6 weeks with upper body injury (Nov - Dec 2018)
2019-20: Missed 1 game
2020-21: Missed two weeks due to being in COVID protocol

This year, he played 22:21 per night (2nd on Devils) and scored 5-14-19 in 44 games on a team that only scored only 145 goals (TOR scored 187, 29% more)
If his ice-time and share of points were the same, over 56 game season in Toronto, that would have been approximately 8-23-31 (2nd to only Rielly's 5-30-35).

Here's an idea...

TOR gives: Liljegregn to NJD, 2021 3rd to DET, 2022 1st to NJD
DET gives: Retains on Subban (50% retained, from $6m to $3m)
NJD gives: Subban (33% retained, from $9m to $6m), Miles Wood (50% retained, from $2.75m to $1.375m)

TOR gets: Subban at $3 million AAV ($667k real money), Miles Wood at $1.375m
DET gets: 2021 3rd round pick (TOR)
NJD gets: Liljegren, 2022 1st round pick (TOR)
