Now think about this logically for a second, by Wsh getting rid of Orpiks contract completely, they now have 5.5m to spend on keeping Kuznetsov, Oshie, Alzner, Orlov, Williams, Burakovsky etc. Plus they add some depth for this years playoff run. With Gelinas maybe being a e returnee if they can get him for cheap which based off this season it should be.

They lose a goalie prospect who is probably one of the better ones right now but look at their depth already, Holtby, Grubauer, Vanacek, etc.

They lose a bargaining chip down the line but they essentially gain keeping 2 of the aforementioned players as a result since that money goes directly to keeping them with the team for repeat Cup attempts for multiple years in a row.

Colorado, I know you don't want Orpik, who does? But you get a goalie prospect worthy of going all out on. Instead of losing a star player or a top notch prospect you lose virtually nothing. Problem is now you have a 5.5M 5-6-7 dman. IMHO, bite the bullet. Buy him out. Whether its this summer or the next one. Since the Avs wouldn't be very good next year either, keeping Orpik may help with the retool and provide leadership. If not just buy him out now.

Love it, great job Marco! I think Samsonov would be perfect for the Avs!

As a Caps fan Samsonov is the only untouchable. That kid is a freak and will be over here right in time to move Holtby on his last year of his deal for a great return.

By that time, Ovechkin will be old, Backstrom will be old, all of the good players will be getting pretty old except for a few of the younger ones. This is a calculated risk. Yeah you lose a great prospect but you're already stacked at G. The Caps time is now and for the next 2-4 years. Removing Orpiks contract means you can take repeated solid attempts at a cup by being able to resign the important players like mentioned in the trade description. Is Ilya Samsonov worth more then a potential 2-3 cups in a row? Also Holtby will be only 30 by the time his contract ends. How many other goalies have put up stellar numbers after 30? Tons. Lundqvist, Luongo, Rinne, etc. They are only now starting to really decline but they are also in their mid to late 30's.

Just remember, there is always the chance that Samsonov doesn't end up being a star goalie...... Just an average one.

Samsonov will never be traded. He's the best goalie prospect in the world, no way we give him up. Vanecek is expendable, but Samsonov isn't.

Do you think the caps will win the cup this year? What about the year after that? What about the year after that? Is Samsonov a goalie great goalie prospect on team with one of the best goalies already in the game, with a solid back up and depth at the position already is more important then resigning key players to the team long term, then sure, don't make the trade. But speaking of it hypothetically, if the Caps win the cup with this current roster and are able to keep the more important pieces of this roster intact, making repeat cups way more possible as a result, I think you have to think long and hard about it.

As I've said previously, there's always the chance that Samsonov doesn't become a superstar goalie. He could fall into the Varlamov, Ward, Lehtonen category. How many Price's are there every decade? Look at the trend, many of the top goalies in the league aren't even 1st rounders and many times are later round picks or undrafted.......

Anyways its food for thought. If for whatever reason it wouldn't work for WSH, the Avs would have the next 2-4 years to find the right goalie and save themselves the Orpik buyout.

It would at least be a logical chain of reasoning for Brian MacLellan. As much as the ideal situation would be to dump Orpik's contract without having to give up assets of any real value, this isn't NHL 17. You have to give to get, and it may be worth mortgaging a future starter goalie (and 'future' is waaaaaay down the road, considering Holtby) in order to make runs at the Cup, especially since Ovechkin's only got so many more years of good production in him. MacLellan should at least do his due diligence with regards to this avenue.

What if it cost you a cup next year? Would you not consider it if you knew in hindsight?

Agreed. Listen, its a risk factor that has to be weighed. Every major deal is a risk for both teams involved.

If this works out perfectly for WSH for example, they'd of used this money to resign key UFAs and RFAs and potentially win the cup the next 1-5 years or at least once within that time frame. Compared to losing key players to free agency, etc and potentially lessening their chance at a cup as a result. Also what if Samsonov becomes the next Varlamov? I don't think anyone in WASH is crying about him leaving right?

On the flip side, Colorado is taking on major cap constrictions and salary to be paid out in order to land a potential star goalie in Samsonov without giving anything of real value in return. In a perfect world, Samsonov eventually becomes a number 1 goalie for them and WSH wins their cups before the Avs start taking runs at it themselves which within the 3 year time frame isn't likely for the Avs.
