If VAN is disciplined enough to build around Pettersson-Hughes age window

Created by: lrw2105
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2021
Published: Jun. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The purpose of this roster is to think about how VAN might gather picks/prospects without sacrificing longterm flexibility. The Pettersson Hughes contracts (esp. QH) are far from ideal from VAN's perspective, but in this universe VAN wasn't able to do better in those negotiations, making demonstrating contender status in 2 years of the utmost importance for keeping them longterm. In an ideal version of this universe, VAN would have also traded Pearson at the 21 deadline for assets, but what's done is done. General framework of these roster moves are trades with contenders who either need roster players to improve their window and/or to clear cap. In return, VAN gets decent roster players + picks/prospects.

Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Goncalves, Gage
  2. Johnson, Tyler
  3. Joseph, Mathieu
Additional Details:
In this universe, SEA takes Foote from Tampa, and decides to use their cap in other ways. Even though TJ doesn't fit VAN's age bracket, he is a good bottom six center and the two good prospects seem? a somewhat lighter price for 3 years of his contract than other teams were attempting to extract - VAN seems to be a chosen trade partner for cap-strapped teams (see VGK, Schmidt also Tampa, Miller) as perhaps VAN is a gentler negotiating partner?
TBL
2.
VAN
  1. Compher, J.T.
  2. Kovalenko, Nikolai [Reserve List]
  3. 2021 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
COL generally does not trade 1sts, but maybe that will change as they see the limits of their contention window/the MacKinnon contract with that policy. This gives COL a flexible LW/C who can replace Kadri (in this universe traded elsewhere or exposed to SEA due to playoff suspension) in 21-22, and then shifted over to wing to replace Burakovsky for 22-23 if Newhook becomes a longterm 2C. It also helps COL clear some cap by trading similar players in terms of age/skill but with different cap hits.

approximate break down:
2021 1st -> JTM
JTC + Kovalenko -> 3rd + Motte
COL
  1. Miller, J.T.
  2. Motte, Tyler
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
VAN gets a roster player similar to Motte + a good prospect who was not coming over to COL that quickly because he had little chance of making the line up, so recently signed a 2 year KHL contract. Likely to come over after that contract (fitting VAN's new contention window).
3.
VAN
  1. Mayfield, Scott
  2. Wilde, Bode
Additional Details:
NYI exchange RD prospects of differing ceilings in order to clear some cap. Am unsure of values here - those who know NYI's system better, your thoughts much appreciated. General framework is an exchange of defensive prospects where ceiling value favors VAN in return for taking on the cap of a decent, but non-core NYI player that strengthens VAN's defense.

Had a similar proposal in my AGM: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2474554

Avs would have to shed more salary, but I think there's a fit.

Assuming that a team is in cap distress, they aren't going to be trading away a top-4 defenseman with a miniscule cap hit ($1.45 million) in an effort to cure it. Try something with Nick Leddy.

I think most GMs are looking wide-eyed at Scott Mayfield. Isles can't protect everybody, Isles fans. That being said, Mayfield is sure to fetch at the very least a 3rd or something.

Isles are not trading Mayfield. They will trade Leddy before they expose Mayfield.

Would you have said the same about Devon Toews last year?

that was a completely different situation, there was no expansion draft last year it was purely a cap move

My point is they probably would've preferred to move Leddy, as they do this year

I'm open to trading Mayfield if it fills other holes on the roster and we get a suitable replacement somewhere else. For example, if we trade Mayfield and Dal Colle for Juolevi, Motte, and a 2nd, then sign Jason Demers or Brandon Montour (or someone like them) to a cheap contract, then I'd do it.

This doesn't seem worth it in my opinion.
