At the beginning of the year I was 100% on protecting Copp and letting Appleton go. Throughout the year Appleton has changed my mind. Also Copp is going to want Lowry type money or possibly more. For the price tag on Appleton I will take that instead. Bringing in a guy like Haula and bringing back Matty P helps on the right side in the bottom six. I agree we could probably get more for Copp but if trading Copp to Carolina and that helping us get Dougie wouldnt that be worth it? Would this package have gotten it done in the regular season? My opinion is not. Also my opinion is that Dougie would like the extra year that a team with his rights would be allowed to give him.
It doesn't matter if this deal would or wouldn't have been enough in the regular season, it's irrelevant. Now is what matters.
If Hamilton is willing to sign an extension in Carolina, but still wants to be traded and Winnipeg is where he wants to go, then you give Carolina a 2nd or 3rd for their trouble and that's that. There's no reason too give them anywhere near fair value if he wants to leave Carolina and go to Winnipeg with an 8 year contract.
If there is more than one team involved and Hamilton is okay with going to any interested team and doesn't have a preference, then you need to beat the other team(s) involved and it could cost this much or more. Although this situation is the least likely.
The most likely situation is that Hamilton wants to leave as a UFA and will just do that and decide where he's going on his own with no concerns about who is trading for him.
Your overall premise of paying Carolina a heavy premium when Hamilton wants to come to Winnipeg, just doesn't make sense.
