Description
Yeah I’m not good on determining value of picks vs players, it seems picks have more value then they used to. The Gurianov trade is a steal for one team or the other it basically trade him for a second and they drop a few draft spots and Stars move up a few because I’d bet no Ottawa fans would trade a first round pick straight up for him but he’s worth more than a second rounder imo. The main thing is trading him before he gets another contract so there’s less trouble finding space to extend Hintz, Oettinger and Robertson over the next couple seasons.

Seattle is likely to take the best player available. With the exposed players that meet the minimum requirements: Kero, Comeau, Sekera, Khudobin then guys like Dickinson and some minor leaguers/prospects they might take a chance on Mascherin but Dickinson is a good pickup next to the other options.
Khudobin is redundant if Bishop starts the season, Oettinger’s ready to continue playing in the NHL and someone out there needs a solid backup, picked Pitt because there was a rumor going around they wanted a veteran backup (they might mean a cheaper one though like a Brian Elliot type).

We aren’t trading Gurianov to move up 4 spots and get a 2nd. He should be one of the last guys we consider moving.

Trading Guri right now would be a huge mistake. He hasn’t gotten proper usage/minutes and is still working on consistency. Anything you got right now isn’t enough for the player he could/should be. Moving up a few slots in the first and a second rounder do nothing for us now. Nothing about this makes sense

The most important questions you need to start with are: 'why are we moving a player?' and 'what are our goals in the return?'. Without clear answers to these you can't really set up a frame work for a deal.

Almost every trade involves 2 teams with different overall goals to make it work. Considering DG is a young talented player that usually means you are going to target someone who is better but older or less contract control or the other extreme of only picks and prospects. Considering DAL's window I would assume it is the former.

So I would target teams that could use someone like DG and try and make a package with him and some other assets for an asset that DAL will need.

You could also go the 3rd way which would be putting him with a bad contract for cap space

That’s why I’m asking what’s he worth? I don’t think he’s straight up worth a first rounder a over the top 15.

Given the fact that it’s almost a guarantee that Nill will extend Klingberg with a Seguin sized contract (I don’t agree with it but it will happen)then Robertson and Oettinger need bridge deals then the next year Hintz’s contract is due, we’ll need all the cap space possible to fill out the roster.

To trade him before he has another bad season and turns into another Honka or Nichushkin losing his value and get something.

The thing is they don’t need him this year the top 6 Robo, Hintz and Pavs then Benn, Seguin, Rads with the option to move Kivi up as a utility guy and a few forwards in the AHL that deserve a look on the 4th line with Kivi or whoever drops down from the top 6: Damiani, Mascherin (if Seattle doesn’t pick him), Bourque (could make the team but they should extend how long until his elc expires by leaving him in the Quebec league for his last season of junior eligibility), Dellandrea might take the steps needed to get a full time spot. Any of these guys couldn’t be any worse that Gurianov defensively or even when the puck is not on his stick or when he’s at the end of a shift and dumps it in on a 3 on 3.... He’s good if you can spring him for a breakaway and he’s good for the power play I can’t think of anything else he’s done that stands out as an exceptional talent.

It wouldn't be smart to move our only good sniper, we have enough defense first guys already. After this year Rads and Pavs are gone so who will replace them? Not any of Mascherin, Damiani or Dellandrea because they were all in the AHL for a reason, all of them played behind Comeau, Kero and Dowling, and that means that Bones doesn't trust them. Gurianov has a lot of offensive upside, yet isn't used well by our defensive first coach in Bones. He was almost on a 45 point pace this season, I don't see where you see a bad season there, he was played on a PP with Lindell and Kero and was played with the same ice-time as Comeau, yet still had a pretty good year. We saw how good he was in the playoffs. It's just his second season cut him some slack. The kid can be good just give him some time.
