Mete was claimed so the Sens could trade off their excess defence with trade value at the TDL, and was a capable stopgap, but I can't see Mete being more than a depth guy in Ottawa moving forward. He might get a QO and 1 year contract, and he might be a part of the Graves trade, but as soon as Sanderson arrives, Mete is gone regardless. Graves, who is a legitimate middle pair defender, can hold the position this season, and allow Sanderson an easier transition next season. He's the type of defender the Sens target. Mete was just right time, right place.

I agree Mete is the one that gets squeezed out when Sanderson arrives and I'm perfectly okay with that. However if Mete isnt included in the swap then he's likely getting pushed out right now and I think the value he's built up in Ottawa would evaporate if he wasn't actually playing next season. If he was included in the swap then you're left with Brannstrom/Graves potentially being pushed out next year (neither of those would be ideal) or Sanderson is stuck in Belleville for a year and that likely isnt necessary.

Why make a move to create an excess at one position when a trade for bolster the RD wouldnt give you the same sort of problems to work out at the next tdl? We can agree to disagree on the fit for Graves but I dont see any reason why Mete cant be the stopgap at 3LD until Sanderson breaks in at the end of next year. Take that same 2nd and 3rd to use on a RD, coaching staff has made it clear that JBD could use some time in Belleville next year so get someone to fill the right side out with Zub and Zaitsev instead of crowding the left side. Seems like a much simpler and more logical solution to me, thats all.

Regardless of if he agreed to waive or not, "talk of" just means speculation.

Sure, anyone can speculate but a buyout is unlikely.

Gourde is a much better player than Schmidt, and Schmidt is pretty good. This seems about right for him

That misses the point - Tampa is in no position to ask for a first for Gourde as they need cap space. He has four years left at $5.166M so asking for a first when you need him gone isn't going to get you very far.

I don’t have a problem with Zaitsev, Zub, JBrown, JBD on the right. Brannstrom and Mete can both play the right side, which is why I figured Mete might be around for one season as depth if he wasn’t a part of a trade. My biggest concern is Chabot, Brannstrom, Mete, Aspirot on the left side. If Brannstrom and Mete can slide right, it makes more sense to get that middle pair LD, or just grit teeth until JBD wrestles JBrowns spot away from him.

This is the same scenario as with Oleksiak instead of Graves.

We don't need him gone because we have multiple similar contracts to trade as well. Gourde is the one I'd want to give up the least
