Trade Deadline: Blockbusters with Anaheim and Boston

Description
I personally think Colin Miller is one of the most undervalued defensemen in the NHL today. He's currently playing on the Boston Bruins' third-pairing when he's been better than both Adam McQuaid and Brandon Carlo this season.

I believe that Leafs management will look for situations like this as a way to target and exploit undervalued players and hopefully acquire them at minimal cost.

The BLOCKBUSTER trade with Anaheim is honestly something that I believe could work in a real life scenario.

It makes it more unlikely now that Rielly is battling a high ankle sprain but that still doesn't diminish the great reputation that Morgan Rielly has throughout the league.

He has all those intangibles that the old school folk (and those are the types in power in Anaheim) look for, and while he is a legit player, I believe that the Leafs could exploit this for a big upgrade, IMO.

Hampus Lindholm is a solid offensive player (admittedly not as elite as Rielly), and is truly elite defensively, which is where the Leafs desperately need help.

People around the league know Lindholm is a good defenseman but, hell, there are plenty of people who believe Cam Fowler is better than him! Which isn't the case, but please, for the sake of this proposed trade let them think that.

Lindholm is the kind of number one defenseman the Leafs need and acquiring him for Rielly would indeed be a worthwhile upgrade to our blueline.

As for Zaitsev? While he's been a great free wallet and is a legitimate top four guy, he is also EXEMPT from the Expansion Draft, which would be massive for Anaheim since Josh Manson wouldn't be.

I also think Manson is an upgrade over Zaitsev, but it doesn't mean I think Zaitsev is a bad player, I just think Manson is better in his own end, while I'll concede that Zaitsev is probably better offensively.

The Zaitsev being exempt factor makes it work for both sides to me.

As for the rookies thrown in? Nielsen is the kind of player I'd expect the Anaheim brass to rave about. A 6'3" kid who can score from the point and can occasionally lay a big hit.

I think Jaccob Larsson is a true gem and could potentially replace Gardiner in three years if we were to acquire him here.

I also think salary plays a big factor with how much Rielly makes for the next six seasons compared to Lindholm. For a budget team like Anaheim, it most likely makes a difference.

Let me know what you think!

Because Manson is a big tough defender i think your over valuing him. Your giving up the leafs top 2 on ice players for 2 defenders who play on the Ducks 2nd pairing (not commenting on potential).
I'd rather keep what the leafs have. Zaitsev was a great find.

This is a tough one, it seems like a "grass is greener" type of situation. Miller and Carrick put up the same kind of numbers throughout their careers and appear to have the same type of usage at the NHL level. What justifies the addition of 3 prospects for the same player who is a couple of years older?
The Anaheim deal has some potential at least as a framework for a deal but is a heavy over payment. Rielly and Lindholm were the 5th and 6th picks respectively in the 2012 draft, and their values are very similar albeit in slightly different roles. Are either of them a #1 D? Not now and perhaps that is expecting too much. Lindholm may be the better player now and in the future but he does play on a better team with a better supporting cast and that can't be overlooked. It is a little early to anoint one or the other as the better player especially this year with both taking a slight step backwards.
Zaitsev has been a very pleasant surprise and in terms of value, is worth more than Manson and Larsson. The question with Manson is how well can he skate and how much better is he than Marchenko? Same question for Larsson and Nielsen? Nielsen appears to be developing into a much better player than his draft position suggests, at least on the offensive side of the puck.

Your D is definitely different but it doesn't appear any better, just bigger. Carrick = Miller, Rielly = Lindholm, Zaitsev & Nielsen > Manson & Larsson, add in the prospects and we're giving away players to be worse now and down the road.

A lot of unnecessary moves for such slight changes...

Anaheim fan here, but what the hell is the point of that trade? If the ducks are going to trade 3 defenseman they better be getting 3 top 6 forwards in return. Lets try this again. I would say Lindholm for Nylander.

No thanks. Would rather keep Colin Miller at this point. None of those pieces is appealing at all.
