Description
it's a monday, time to hurt myself by thinking about the san jose sharks cap problems. list of moves below:
- gambrell taken in the expansion. as much as i would like burns's cap hit off the books, i don't think seattle will take on his contract + term so gambrell, enjoy the direct flight to seattle.
- buyout joner. martin jones, it's been real but enjoy the buyout cash.
- goodbye simek. nashville is in a similar position to us (i.e. window's closed) and they're weak on d (could net a 3rd instead of a 2nd for simek but the point is, he's gone and doug wilson gets a badly needed pick at any round).
- labanc badly needs a new environment and we need a 2nd line center so welcome to california, ryan strome.
- hutton had solid underlying stats in vancouver, did fine in anaheim and was apparently forgotten in toronto so i'm willing to drop a little cash on trying him out back in the pacific.
- chris dreidger gets rescued from goalie free agency (and spencer knight will likely ascend to 1B in florida after that playoff run) to be the 1A to a still-learning korenar.
- i'm sentimental so welcome back, jumbo and goody.

if we're tanking we're going to have fun while doing it!

1. What in the hell makes you thin SJ needs a 2nd line center, that what Couture is for, Hertl is the 1C.
2. Labanc for Strome is a horrible idea.
3. Thornton ain't coming back, and not on the wing.
4. Goodrow isn't coming back, and playing him on the 2nd line is a mistake.
4. Donato is never going to be a 3C.
5. Simek probably won't return anything more than a 3rd if SJ is lucky.

I think Koerner will be a 2 year around 925K with the fires year being a 2 way and the 2nd year being a 1 way (similar to Kellman's deal from last year (he still needs to earn a spot not be given one)
Driedger I like that deal, though I feel he will take a 3.5 for 2 years in hopes of parlaying that deal into a long term deal for max money at age 28 rather than look for a new deal just under 30 years old.
Hutton is not a need as Knyzhov looks like a solid top 4 D man and Vlasic will be our 3rd line LD as we want to limit his min to around 16-18 a night as he was playing well last season at that clip.
Love the Strom deal but we will have to add to that deal to make it done as Strome to me is the better player between the two.
Donato at under 1 is palatable at 2 mil is not worth it.
SImek and Gambrell I agree here that one goes to Seattle the other is traded for picks but were not getting a 2nd sadly.
love resigning Goodrow but not for the 2nd line.

other than that I feel you have solid plan here for next season, but this is still a fringe playoff team at best.

Strome is a better player than labanc, however if NY goes after Eichel I feel we can get him for a 2nd and a prospect and play him and Labanc as our 1/2 RW and finally have 2 decent RW right handed shots again.
agree on Simek and at best a 3rd or 4th.
Thornton or Marleau back on a league min I'd be ok with but you might be right about him not coming back, I see him going to Tampa on a 1 year min deal to try for a cup.
Donato will be gone one way or another, and Goodrow is a great piece but not on the 2nd line.

For anyone who comments “why” or “what is this” I am posting this purely for my own enjoyment. It will only become your problem if Doug Wilson pays me to make it so.

I wouldn't consider NSH weak on D. They've got one of the best defensemen in the league in Josi. Ekholm and Ellis are both top 30 defensemen as well. They aren't giving up a 2nd for someone who fights to make the lineup. They have a hole to fill in the top 6, so that's really the only spot in their lineup that they should even consider giving up picks for.
