A little more balance up front

Created by: jempey82
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2021
Published: Jul. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A balanced lineup up front with 3 solid lines, and a dependable veteran 4th line that can give you 10 min per night and not be a total liability. Kept Engvall for depth because as bad as some think he is, he is still an NHL caliber player who always seems to play his way into the lineup. With the inevitable injuries he will be a valuable piece that should be able to play 3rd or 4th line minutes.

Hoping Sandin is able to make the jump this year and play second pair minutes. Gave him a sturdy dependable partner who plays that more stay at home style which will allow for Sandin to run a bit, and trust his partner will be there to cover him. Third while not spectacular by any means gives you a solid veteran pairing that can give you 12-15 a night against primarily 3rd and 4th line guys.

Carolina would likely be looking for more than that IMO.

Not sure how much more they might want. If I’m the Leafs the strongest deal I’m willing to put forth would be adding another prospect. He doesn’t get you a first and he doesn’t get you a top prospect with a 2. Most I think he would be worth is Liljegren and a 2

I think that Liljegren + a 2nd gets that deal done. Foegele is a good player, but in reality he scores at the same pace as Kerfoot. I think I'd rather grease Seattle with a 2nd to choose Dermott vs Kerfoot and keep Liljegren on my team. There are many strong goalies available in free agency this year, Toronto doesn't need to be giving up assets to get VV. Also, Washington has a cap issue and they like his low cap hit this year while they figure out what they have in Samsonov.

Any of these offers likely get it done. Think we’re looking for a mid to high 2 but a low 2 with a decent prospect gets it done most likely.

The Vanecek deal is based on him being taken in the expansion draft and the trade is with Seattle.

Foegele has been under utilized in Carolina, I think he brings much more upside than Kerfoot. He has size on the wing and in a top 6 role could be a 25/50 guy plus he kills penalties. I feel like he is a great alternative to Hyman.

Savard isnt that guy, he's been the worse defensive half of his pairing for years and has had bad defensive numbers for longer, Tampa was the first time he looked like that guy since 2016 because they could shelter him.

You have to keep in mind that the 2nd rounder that you had included here won't even be selected for two years and the player involved has yet to play a game in the NHL.

So essentially, Carolina is giving up an NHL regular who contributes for something that may never factor into the team's success on the ice for years to come.

Point being, if Carolina wants to move Foegele, they can likely find a much better deal than the one you have outlined here.

Yeah he wouldn’t be my ultimate guy there, but he made the most sense, and I think he is still a top 4 Dman that plays with a little edge which is something the always D lacked in spades this year. I toyed with the idea of Brendan Smith there since he can play the right as a lefty. But ultimately decided against having 2 left hand right D men. Ask thought of Demers, but think that only works if it’s on the third pairing.

I take savard over smith anyday. Smith is flat out bad, like i wouldn't pay him league min to be the 7th d bad.
My main issue with savard is that he's just going to make too much and not be worth it

I think 4 mil which is about what the market dictates for him in a flat cap year is a decent deal honestly. If he can put up 20 minutes a night with some edge and not be a liability I think 4 million would be well spent.
