The Return From Mediocrity

Created by: tbristow
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2021
Published: Jul. 26, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Re-sign important RFAs, convince Dougie to sign what will likely be his best offer, trade for Tarasenko's full contract (requiring less of a return), fill the 1-B goalie spot with a veteran, and hope that young players like Holtz, Mercer, Foote, Clarke, Walsh, and Bahl improve for the future. Re-signing Zajac isn't a necessity; could fill the 4th C spot with another signing like Nosek or fill from within. The goal is to push for the playoffs while developing the young talent. Subban's contract coming off just in time for Hughes/Bratt/Zacha/Wood extensions gives NJ some flexibility.

Tarasenko is going to want out on day 1 of training camp if you try to put him on your 3rd line

Nooooo! Tarasenko isn’t good anymore, dumb trade. Also there’s no good reason to rush the rebuild, especially with the talent in the upcoming drafts

Studenic is an okay piece, I guess, but doesn't really fit a Blues need. You'd have a better shot at this with someone like Walsh or Vukojevic in his place.

Vukojevic could work

Unlikely the Devils trade Walsh with their lack of RD

Rush the rebuild?? It's time for the Devils to ACTUALLY start improving the team instead of chasing after "loaded drafts". They're $11 million under the salary floor, they got to spend that money somewhere, so why not go after Hamiltion and take a chance on Tarasenko.

I mean they just got a RD in a trade with San Jose. Christian Jaros.

I was more so talking about prospects. Devils have way more LD prospects compared to RD.

Jaros isn't going to be much for the Devils. 25 year old defensemen with less than 100 career NHL games

Bc patience is the best way to build a team. Hamilton is fine cuz he’s good, but why go after Tarasenko? He’s a net negative player

I mean you guys did just draft Hertig. Heard he's pretty decent so far obviously we don't know a lot until we get into something where he's playing full time small sample sizes aren't really much to go on, but you do have the chance on finding him as a diamond in the rough.

I doubt he's a net negative player onces he goes into the season. You have to remember he was thrown into the fire with like 3 open skates and no practices. That's why he didn't produce. He's going into full training camp, which should be better off for him. I believe they should have waited until the beginning of this season to even try again because they could ease him into practice and not have to rush him into season play when other players have peaked while he's behind half a year.

Outside of injuries, Tarasenko has still played at a relatively high level and before that he played at above an 85% WAR percentile (via @JFreshHockey on twitter). The Devils won't be giving up too much in this deal and can afford to take on his contract. We can't keep waiting around for young guys to develop. I think the best way to develop guys like Hughes and Smith are to finally start winning games.

I don't see the top 3 lines as that different in terms of TOI. I only put him there because of the chemistry with the top 2 lines already and that I think he could improve the play of McLeod and Johnsson to the point where they have 3 dangerous lines.

You’re right, he used to be good, although topdownhockey’s war model isn’t the best. There’s no reason for the devils to give up assets for him, chances are he won’t bounce back, and the devils still probably won’t make the playoffs. It’s better the have mother bad season and get another top prospect, hopefully wright
