Extra Money
9.5 mil is far too much for Meier. Gotta trade him if he wants more than $8.5, especially since they have to deal with that garbo palat contract. Meier is not consistent enough for the tkachuk contract. Ideally they get him and bratt for around $16 mil

i was upset with the signing when it happened, i’m not really upset with his performance. It’s far too long for an aging player and too much money for a guy of his caliber to begin with. Even if he does come up clutch in the playoffs, it’s still an abysmal contract. That cap space is way more valuable than he’ll ever be, i guarantee that.
The only way it’ll look like a good move is if he carries them to a cup, which i seriously doubt

he was 5th on the team in goals above replacement and WAR among forwards, ahead of mercer. 1st in even strength offence. you don’t have to score points to be effective.
even if he doesn’t repeat that, doesn’t make sense to dump him before tatar, considering tatar had a pretty wack season last year and scored fewer points than johnsson.

chychrun’ as overrated. i wouldn’t give up 2 firsts for a 2nd pairing guy. his point totals are misleading, he’s gonna cost way too much in a trade

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MellowK</b></div><div>I'm happy to give Blackwood another year. Contract year, fresh and healthy start to a season.
Johnsson hasn't been impactful at all, the only time he's performed in NJ is when Bratt carried him on his shoulders.
Tatar, Johnnson, (Haula? we'll see how he does) are definitely mediocre money.
Graves, Wood and Blackwood are/can be impactful. Graves is likely gone just because of need, Wood will probably be gone/cheaper next offseason, Blackwood we'll see.
Severson is definitely impactful, but it's hard to say where he fits after the Nemec pick. I'd love to extend him on like a 4 year contract, but I don't know if he'll go for that.
Sieg and Shango are definitely keepers.
Smith, McLeod and Bastian aren't anything I'm worried about. Smith is probably the only one that still has potential to be anything on this team moving forward, but he won't be expensive.</div></div>
i agree about tatar, haula, graves being mid players that will give us cap relief, i just don’t think that’s enough if nemec, luke hughes, holtz, zetterlund, and mercer all become parts of the core.
i guess i’m just higher on johnsson than most people. i think he’s got a lot of untapped potential, plus his underlying offensive numbers are really good.

Reimer isn't needed.</div></div>
i don’t really think there is that much if you wanna keep a competitive team. Siegenthaler and johnsson are super underrated and definitely need to be brought back, especially sigenthaler. we can afford to lose johnsson, but i’d rather have him than palat tbh. they were both analytical darlings last year. severson is also written off for some reason, gotta bring him back. most of the money coming off the books i wouldn’t necessarily call mediocre. losing them does make the team worse. and the ones that are bad don’t really create enough cap to sign the young guys if they pan out. can’t really be paying a middle 6 winger like palat $6m.
also blackwood is ass and forever will be, if bernier isn’t healthy i don’t think that tandem gets them into the playoffs.

i think your overestimating how smart nhl gm’s are lmao. the smart thing to do would be to squeeze the leafs, but i don’t think they’ll have that problem

what if this though
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SadlyAnOilFan</b></div><div>Kerfoot to Edmonton makes no sense. He’s an overpaid rental and Edmonton has McLeod at 3C.</div></div>
they don’t necessarily have to send kerfoot directly to the oilers, but they can use the assets they get from him to get jp.
also he’s not overpaid at all. he’s a good two way forward that can play anywhere in the lineup, whether it be wing or center. he can fill a defensive role and kill penalties, he’d also be pretty good playing with drai or mcdavid. plus he only makes $750 k this year in base salary, so he’s a valuable asset. also got 50 points

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HeadHighSauce</b></div><div>can they? they have 700k in space right now. They'll be looking to dump Kerfoot and Holl, I'm assuming, but seeing what just happened with the Flyers and JVR and the Knights with Patches, I'm not sure they would be able to cheaply.
Where is the "don't match" line for them do you think?</div></div>
holl and kerfoot are good enough players that teams will give the leafs assets to acquire. jvr makes a lot of money, but kerfoot only makes like $750k is base money, that’ll be attractive to a lot of teams.
just because of how good sandin is, i think it’d have to be north of $6 million before the leafs deceive to just take the compensation (maybe a little less if the picks are coming from a bad team)

they can just ltir him then, just gotta get rid of that contract. and i think lehner is injured too iirc.
brisson looks good, so him replacing patrick is fine, i just thought maybe they’d wanna let him develop in the ahl for a little
