hes on a long term contract and has only 8pts this year. nuge is shooting a career low and still has 30pts while playing against the top opposition. hes also only 23 and former 1st overall pick

Bjugstad was hurt, 8pts in 31 games...and hes considered a shut down 2nd line C. The Cats were a mess for a long time but now are back to playing good hockey.
Nuge doesnt doesnt hold that sort of value for a team to take a guy under long term contract to retain 2m for 4 more years of it and throw in a 1st round pick.

I get that reasoning but Bjugstad is playing really bad and only had one good year in his career plus gets injured often. Not too mention that his injuries thus far have been the kinds that affect you long term so that isn't good for him......... I know everyone wants to spit on Nuge now but he'd be a decent 2nd line center on most teams. Nuge is still pretty damn good. In free agency right now there would be teams lining up to sign him for 6M a year. Count MTL in that list willing to up the price if need be. In the end Nuge > Bjugstad.

I do admit the retention is way too much though even for my premise. If it were 500K instead, this would be fine in my books but alas the Cats have good depth down the middle already so there really isn't a need for this trade anyway.
