Finishing off the Roster

Created by: TheEarthmaster
Team: 2021-22 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 4, 2021
Published: Aug. 11, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Thomas and Beauvillier contracts values come via Evolving-Hockey's contract projections.

Beauvillier has been mentioned by Rutherford as a potential piece in a Tarasenko to Islanders trade. Acquiring Beauvillier allows the Blues to keep Kyrou and Thomas together on the third line, and also allows them to move up accordingly when injuries occur without damaging the roster. Scandella and Leddy have similar 5v5 profiles so he'll be able to eat similar minutes in New York but is unlikely to have the same power play impact. That said, Scandella is probably their best option over guys like Gardiner, Simek, Kulak, assuming Pittsburgh (foolishly) won't trade with a division rival, and Scandella's acquisition cost here is low given what defensemen are going for these days. He's also a guy you can push down the lineup with a Bolduc, Aho, or Dobson emergence. Not a lot of LHD available, especially with Dunn likely staying put in Seattle. Blues take on Komarov's salary to help the Isles out and also beef up their fourth line. Would also be willing sub in Clutterbuck as I think the two are mostly comparable but Isles fans seem like favor the latter.

In my opinion the Blues need another true defensive defenseman to pair with Parayko, but one who can handle bigger minutes than Bouwmeester did in the shutdown pair's prime. Pettersson is the best option for my money. He plays moderately tough minutes in Pittsburgh and has had solid underlying results. Pittsburgh also needs to shed some salary and probably wouldn't mind making room for POJ. Pettersson has been mentioned as the odd man out here by Rossi. This gives them a depth RHD to act as their seventh/push Friedman and they get a decent pick.

Open to all thoughts and criticisms!

Trades
1.
STL
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony [RFA Rights]
  2. Komarov, Leo
  3. 2022 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Blues get a top six roster player back for Tarasenko, take on some extra salary from Komarov and get a decent pick to even out the value
NYI
  1. Scandella, Marco
  2. Tarasenko, Vladimir
Additional Details:
Islanders get Tarasenko to round out their top line and Scandella to round out their top four, a guy they can push down if Bolduc and Aho prove to be more effective. Scandella likely isn't ideal but there's not too many options left for the Isles for LHD at cap hits they can stomach with Parise/Palmieri in the queue yet
2.
STL
  1. Pettersson, Marcus
Additional Details:
Clears cap space for Pittsburgh as well as opening up a full time LHD spot for POJ. Gives St. Louis a legit top four defensive defenseman to pair with Parayko, ideally an upgraded version of the old Bouwmeester-Parayko magic
PIT
  1. Bortuzzo, Robert
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Insurance RHD for Pittsburgh in case Friedman or Ruhwedel can't handle the minutes. Also clears a full time roster spot for Mikkola/Walman/Perunovich.

1.3M for one more year. Basically buryable if you really hate him and then he's gone

Rutherford is a moron. Beauvillier confirmed in an interview a few days ago that he will be back with the islanders and a contract should be announced soon.

Tarasenko is damaged goods and Scandella is a #6 D. It is hilarious that Blues fans think that acquiring Beauvillier is realistic

I don't think the Islanders are interested in moving Beauvillier. He performed very well in the playoffs.

I don't completely disagree with you but he's the obvious guy to trade and Rutherford has been extremely reliable for many years. If he says Beaus name was floated, it was floated. Doesn't mean it's going to happen but Beauvillier isn't the one who decides if he's back with the islanders, even if he has a contract.

So Beauvillier said he is signing a contract with the Islanders, so he’s lying?

No he is not the obvious guy to trade. That is who Armstrong probably wants and who Blues fans want. The Islanders beat writer said that Bailey would be the one to go , not Beauvillier. Beauvillier is pretty much untouchable.

I'm sure McDavid's name get floated by every team also. Doesn't change the fact that the Isles are not trading Beau for Tarasenko.

I’ve never seen a more delusional fanbase. Every team should be inquiring about Beauvillier , he’s a great player. That does not mean the Islanders have any interest in trading him. These fans feel entitled to trade for him 😂

Even if he signs a contract with the Islanders, that doesn't mean he's not going to be traded is my point. RFAs have no trade protection. Bailey would be fine but Arthur Staples included this floated question less than a week ago. Guys put comments like that in there because they've heard stuff. They're not making it up. You might think he's untouchable and it doesn't mean he's going to be traded but Isles management clearly has considered parting with him and denying that is denying the reality.

I'm so sorry my *checks notes* mock trade where I give you guys a potential top line player and a LHD to fill the role you need and take back extra salary from your team makes you feel like I'm entitled. Grow up, it's a freaking fantasy roster and you're all butthurt

Also, Scandella had a 43% xgf% last season - he was brutal - he’s going to round out the top 4? When you think of trades, did you ever think that it has to make sense for the other team and not just the blues ?

I said I don't disagree that he sucks but where are your better options. Is Pittsburgh trading Pettersson in division. Do you want Radim Simek. Like, your options are limited.

When was the last time an RFA was signed and moved a few weeks later? And I wasn’t talking about Staple - he knows nothing. Can you prove that the islanders management has considered parting with him?

The only thing that was put out there was that Montreal asked about Beauvillier .

No one has heard anything from Lou, if they have Parise, Cizikas, and Palmeri would have been leaked. Staple has no inside information , he is making a tweet to try and get hits. There is no rumor about Isles even considering moving Beau, just writers from other teams saying they want him.

So he sucks so the Islanders should not only trade their what wringer, but take on a terrible defenseman on an awful contract for the next 3 years?

They can trade for one of Soucy/Dunn (whoever is available, they have too many D) , koekkek , De haan.

That was in his athletic article which was behind a paywall, so he's not just getting clicks.

NHL rumors daily, on the other hand, is very much trying to get clicks to coddle the apparently very fragile egos of Isles fans. I should have known, they cry every time someone says their team that has faded down the stretch in two consecutive seasons and would have missed the playoffs if not for Covid twice says they are bad

NRD has been right above almost every isles move over the last 2 seasons.

The Blues lost their best defenseman to an expansion team and a bunch of their players are primed to fall off a Cliff. Why are you getting so triggered because you won’t be able to get Beauvillier for Tarasenko 😂 - Enjoy your damaged goods! You little peasant

I was very obviously referring to the Seattle guys but sure sign Koekkoek where's he at. Where's the signing. I'm waiting. It's a thing they could do. It's not been rumored at all though, so it's just as credible as my thing. Thanks for suggesting an equally credible option I guess.

At least the Isles still have Norris caliber defenseman 😂 - Armstrong lost Pietrangelo and Dunn for nothing and decided it was a better idea to give Faulk and Krug long term deals 💪🏻😭😭
