Is Carolina actually happy about this? Sure it screws MTL's plans but is KK better than Aho, Trochek, or Staal? No. On wing would he be better than Svechnikov, Neiderreiter, Teravainen, or Necas? No.

Evolving hockey projected $1.6M for KK on a one year deal. So not only is Carolina overpaying a player $4.5M to be a 3rd line W or a 4th Line C, but they are also giving up a 1st and a 3rd round pick to do it. Should be an easy decision for MTL not to match. Draft is in MTL, take the draft picks (aren't lottery protected) and just sign Bozak (who is better than KK at the moment) or trade for another C.

KK might have 1st to 2nd line C upside but I don't see him hitting that for another 3+ years... it's not worth paying him $6M / year until he realizes his potential.

Kotkaniemi hasn’t progressed as much as we wanted to unfortunately, B. Tkachuk or Hughes wouldve been a better pick at 3rd overall no doubt. KK had 20 pts this year, got benched in the Cup Final. Bergevin even said in his presser that he didnt feel comfortable going with KK as the clear 2C next season. Hes still young but seeing how deep the draft is next year (one of the deepest since 2015) and its in MTL, I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t match. 6.1M is triple what he should be making and the QO next year is leverage for his agent to get the money they want for his next deal too. MB can use those picks as assets in another trade to acquire a 2C too. Hes got options.

Other thing is, Bergevin has a massive ego. KK signing that OS is definitely not something he must be happy about. Curious to see where this goes but don’t think anyone is “hiding their pain” lmao Ive included KK in 90% of the deal I proposed on here in the last few months lol
