It’s not a horrible idea. Negotiate a deal at the time of the offersheet for 9 years term. Sign him to max (could have been a bit more this year). Then subtract it off the remaining 8 years.

CBJ would much better off, keeping their four first rounders, some which are sure to be lottery picks, and spending cap wisely on UFA next season. 13.5m I way too much in cap strapped league.
Leaf can't afford even retained Domi, and doubt if they have any ambition to add him to the team.
