Team Explanation
It’s only one game…but Brandon Duhaime looks to be the real deal. Add to this Boldy and Beckman knocking on door, I think Jordan Greenway is completely expendable. In fact, I can see him getting traded at the deadline even if the Wild make the playoffs.

Or you keep him and make a run this year and trade him after the season. Isn’t the objective to compete right now before the impending cap hell? Greenway surely helps that.

Strome if he plays well and goes off next to either Fiala or Kaprizov is worth much much more in any return you get if you move him later. If he doesn't, his value is still roughly on par with Greenway's is now, and plays a more important position, and you can still get the same value irregardless.

You make that trade 100/100 times. Strome's value either increases or stays the same and the assets in return follow suit.

No brainer.

You still run into the problem of re-signing both Strome and Fiala next season.

I'm not a Strome fan and wouldn't Greenway for him. I would trade a couple of picks to get Strome for the season and see where how things go. Like you said his value really isn't going to change much. It's a go for it move that might not actually cost much of anything in the long run.

The cap is an issue in the offseason, but can be addressed then by trading the RFA FWDs as needed at the draft.

You're not trading for Strome with the intent to keep him. He's strictly a rental asset that gives us better center depth this year, when we already have internal options to replace Greenway on the wing. Duhaime can already replace Greenway on that line with Foligno and Hartman. Nothing lost there. And both Boldy and Beckman are pushing for NHL roster spots already, even if there's still a little bit of seasoning left to do there yet.

Furthermore, Strome isn't a necessity past this season anyway due to the fact Rossi should be ready to go and take that 2C spot as soon as next year. It's fine to let him marinate down in Iowa this year, as it is what it is, but he's shown more than enough to indicate he'll be ready for the NHL by that point.

Keep Fiala, move out Strome for increased value and a haul if he goes off and the team is sitting pretty from having dealt from a position of strength for a weakness. If not, you still deal Strome for roughly the same price point as Greenway.

You've lost nothing. It has no effect long-term whatsoever. But does give us much better center depth in the here and now.

That's why you do it, and why it's a no brainer.
