Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2017
Published: Mar. 9, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lot of flexibility but just a general outline of what I think Rutherford should do moving forward.

Vegas - Fleury is a fit as long as he agrees to waive, if not he'll be bought out; send them picks/AHL players as incentive

1st Line - Crosby with the young studs
2nd Line - Swedes with Geno
3rd Line - B/K to force matchups, Wilson has shown flashes of potential
4th Line - defensively sound Kunitz and Sundqvist to make room for Sprong to develop as two way player

D1 - see if Maata can regain form next to Letang
D2 - Dumoulin and Schultz, defense and offense specialists together
D3 - Cole and Hainsey provide sound 3rd pair defense
Rotate in Pouliot and Corrado for development

Pens have too much to offer for VGK to take Fleury. That NMC is costly right now. You are better off to buy him out and take the cap hit from that.

Agreed. Better for the Pens to eat the final two years of his cap hit than bribe Vegas with picks and prospects that could be used for a deadline acquisition to bring another Cup.

What goalie brings in fans better than Fleury in the short term? For Fleury, it's an opportunity to continue to be a fan favorite (albeit in a new city), while also being a #1 goalie in the NHL. It's abundantly obvious he doesn't love the situation in Pittsburgh and his play has suffered as a direct result. For Vegas, he fills the seats and provides a veteran presence to what will be a young team. He can be their #1, locked up just long enough for their prospects to develop. Not to mention that Vegas will need to take on salary in some way to meet their base requirement.

Rutherford just has to give Fleury the ultimatum: get bought out and make the process ugly, or choose to go to a city that needs his services and be a star on a new team.

3rd round picks and AHL sweeteners like Rowney won't win any more cups than keeping players like Rust and Wilson.

One of the rare PIT fans that makes a realistic lineup.

Vegas can't be a cap dump for all teams though...and shouldn't be frankly. ANY team looking to unload cap should be willing to give serious assets. McPhee wouldn't be doing his job if he just accepted what every team preferred.

I think the issue isn't whether Fleury would be willing to waive as much as why Vegas would take him when they could likely take a young unprotected forward like Wilson or Rust or a d-man like Maatta (if they resign and protect Schultz) instead
