No Changes Until 22-23

Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 7, 2021
Published: Nov. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sick of hearing about Dorion going out to find a D man. We have 7 on one-way contracts and Brannstrom in the AHL. We are NOT a D man away from competing so relax.

GONE GONE GONE at the 2022 trade deadline:
Tierney - maybe a 3rd + or decent prospect
Ennis - 4th or whatever
Sanford - maybe a 5th
Gambrell - maybe a 7th
Holden - maybe a 4th
J Brown - maybe a 7th
Mete - maybe a 6th
Forsberg - maybe a 7th

Unless Gustavsson struggles and Jesse Blacker craps the bed, this is a playoff team, maybe even a serious one. And we still have guys like Greig, Boucher, Sokolov, Jarventie, Kastelic, JBD, Sogaard, Kleven +++ waiting for their chance.
Yes, we COULD forget Blacker and go after a bigger UFA name but I'm not sure finishing bottom of the pack this season will help us nab one of the few decent RHD that are UFA.

I doubt Arizona is giving up a pick to take that contract on

Allocating Mete with aging UFA depth is really bizarre... despite his NHL experience he's still a 23 year old RFA with potential... a nice asset

MTL stupidly rushing him was very unique

Wow I really didn't think I'd see Windsor spitfires legend jesse blacker in the NHL in the 2020s but here we are definitely an impressive KHL year so far

Once Thos Season Ends, They Should Try Tade For Kravtsov, I'm A Firm Believer That You Can Score Him For Mete+Gambrell+TBL 2nd Rounder, If You Put All The Things Kravtsov Has Achieved Since Being Drafted, There's Not Much There, But He Does Have The Potential Of Being An Every Day NHLER

You may be right, perhaps a 3rd makes GMs hesitant, but It's for sure Ottawa could move Colin White for a 4th.
There has to be at least one GM out there willing to gamble that White fits nicely into their middle 6 and maybe they need to cap hit...
If not, he gets claimed off waivers... whatever saves us from having to buy him out.

If your playoff hopes for next season rest on 31 year old Jesse Blacker discovering he's actually a tip 4 NHL Dman, you've perfectly highlighted the fact that they very much DO need to make an improvement on that right side. I'd agree with you that this upcoming UFA class is not the solution to the problem. There are few notably good options, and Ottawa won't be a top landing spot for most of them. That's why it's important for Ottawa to be active in the trade market, and why they should start looking now and not in the summer. Bringing in a guy now who can start gelling with the team and start helping them win games is still really important even if the goal isn't to be a playoff team this season.

I'm certainly open to hearing your ideas. Who should they go after and what should they be willing to give up?

I think a guy like Philippe Myers would be an interesting buy low candidate. He's not even a regular in the lineup in Nashville, and has upside as a 2nd pair defender. He's a big body who can skate and can transition the puck. I think he's a significant upgrade on Brown and Zaitsev this year, and I think he could be a great partner for Sanderson next year.

He'd be a MASSIVE upgrade on Brown and Zaitsev but I'm not sure he'd be a buy-low candidate. He's a 6'5 24 y/o with over 100 games played and solid stats with the Flyers. A $2.5 cap hit is a bargain and he's still an RFA at the end of his deal. Benning is UFA this summer and Nashville doesn't have any RHD prospects worth mentioning. I think they plan to go with Fabbro, Carrier and Myers next season.
Not saying we shouldn't kick the tires, just don't believe for a second that he'd come cheap. And to be very honest, Blacker seems to have developed nicely in the KHL and 30-32 isn't all that old. Plenty of top 4 d men in that age group. My far bigger concern would be goaltending. Could Gus actually play the majority of the games and keep that save% up there... Murray hasn't been good since 18-19.
