Description
Watching Marc Andre Fleury secure his 44th career shutout in the 4-0 win against the Florida Panthers today brought a crazy idea to my mind. I'll admit it is not realistic and not very popular but here it is. The Penguins core (Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Kessel, Fleury) all 30 years old you have to think, how long is the Pittsburgh Penguins cup window? Now keep in mind I am the biggest pens fan you will ever meet & ive played hockey for the last 15 years of my life so I do know a little bit about the game. MY IDEA IS that If the pens cup window is only for another 2-5 years would it be smarter to maybe trade MURRAY INSTEAD OF FLEURY this offseason. Now I'm not saying this is what they should do or what I want them to do it's just a unpopular idea I thought of. My reason behind this is with Murray being the penguins long term future goalie & him due for a big raise in the near future more than Fleurys current contact, when our cup window closes the pens may not be a cup contender let alone a playoff contender. So why be paying a goalie a boat load of money when the overal team won't be as good? why pay that money to a goalie for many years when you could trade him when his value is high to stock up on more prospects and picks so that we can extend our cup window. Another reason why this could work is with TRISTAN JARRY. Jarry has been phenomenal in the ahl this year and could jump to the NHL next year, so why not have him and fleury alternate the next couple of years till jarry is ready to take over. Cool idea. It's smart because you're most likely not going to have this type of core for a while (unless 2005 happens all over again) so might as well keep winning in this time span.

Trading Murray - at this point in time - would garner a lot in return. But yeah I don't think they are going to do that because they value future very heavily in North American sports.

A lot on the line that Fleury can be a good NHL goalie for the next two years. But if you and JR believe it, it's a great alternative you suggest. And the Pens have two years to find the next goalie, if it's not Fleury or Jarry.

I don't thk Fleury is going to give you the elite goaltending Murray will. Adding Tkachuk is nice, but he isn't in the lineup? Not really addressing a need, forward core is already deep. Need a 3C if anything and they don't need to trade their better cheaper goalie for that

Love the creativity, I do think about this sometimes too.
However we are really set at wingers at least for the next year, so I think the biggest priority would be to get a center. Maybe get back Staal from Carolina w/ 50% retained? Sounds like a fantasy, but that would probably be good for both teams.
I think we'll also need to offload Hags if we are keeping Schultz, Dumo, and Sheary together.
All in all I don't have a clear view of what options are really out there and can fit all sides, but the general direction is definitely worth Jim's time

I know a lot of people say to get rid of him because of this and that, but he's one of the bigger reasons why this team plays with speed. He's a catalyst in that department. I don't think getting rid of him is such a great idea. Same as when people suggest to dump Bonino, but I think he's a perfect 3C.
