Description

We can fit Gaudreau (or Gaudreau-sized acquisition) next year. Is it the best move? Who knows....but it could fit.

My Math:

1. For 2022-23 (lineup below), we are at $79.6m

2. For 2023-24, we have some big contracts coming off books

- Tatar (-$4.5m)
- Johnsson (-$3.4m)
- Bernier (-$4.1m)

- They can be replaced with Holtz, Thomspon and Daws (+$1.8m)

- TOTAL: -$10.2m (net)

3. Then account for raises:

- Blackwood: +$2.5m
- Smith +$3.0m
- Sharangovich: +$1.5m
- Severson: +$1.2m
- Siegenthaler: +$1.8m
- Graves: +$1.1m
- McLeod: +$0.8m

Another Gaudreau-sized acquisition could be Nathan Gerbe. Rocco Grimaldi and Tyler Ennis also come to mind.

I have Hischier as 1a. Hughes/ Mercer/Sharangovich cannot win faceoffs consistently, Mercer is playing sheltered mins (as I think he should being a rookie), and Mcleod cannot find much offense.

Sheltered minutes? It’s kinda been the opposite with no Hughes in lineup. If game is on the line, it’s Mercer line out there.

Sheltered as in starts mostly in the offensive zone, not played against opposing team top scoring line, and little penalty kill. Which is exactly how I think the Devils should play him and not throw Mercer into the deep end.
