Getting JT is hard...

Description
Just a guess as to what the ask would be if extension talks go south. This should be a situation where a team that lands him will lock him up immediately, no rental pricing. As nice as it would be to have JT and Tarasenko together, it would be terrible to lose these three guys. Tough call.

Agreed, that's the best approach. The Blues could afford Tavares in 2018 (especially if they buy-out Lehtera, but that probably won't happen). But there are rumors stemming from a tweet that said the rather obvious: if extension talks go south, NYI should trade Tavares this summer. If the sweepstakes start early, it would likely be a situation where he'll be allowed to talk extension with potential suitors. It could end up just like Shattenkirk where the ask is astronomical and he ends up going for rental price later on (or not at all). This is just fun speculation. I think NYI will be able to extend him.

AK tune: You kinda figure JT will want to go to a contending team, if he leaves the Isles. And there are few contending teams that have the cap space to sign JT. Not Washington, Rangers, Penguins or Tampa most likely.
So who does that leave.....maybe San Jose, and the Blues, maybe a few others. So while they Blues might have only a one in five change to sign him.....maybe you wait. If nothing else, you have cap room to spend/or not spend on someone(s) else.

I don't think any team will trade what the Isles will expect for him in return. Just based off other trades around the league its would be like two 1st rounders, a sure fire stud prospect like Puljujarvi and right now good young roster player like a Fabbri....... Is Tavares even worth that? Think about it for a second. You'll probably get more productions keeping the rest of those players than Tavares for 7 years. Who remember, will cost a pretty penny and in terms of production won't equate to the return that is given away for him over the length of the contract.

I think any team that wants him should wait till free agency and bid for his services. Unless they get him at the TDL for a more reasonable return.
