You seem and correct me if I'm wrong to be looking at it like they have to trade Chychrun ,I on the other hand am looking at it if from an AZ POV we can get a king's ransom do it otherwise we have the perfect guy to build the future around
I’m really not.
It’s the concept of weaponizing cap space.
Let’s see if we can get this through if we remove names from it. Let’s just place a number value on things. And of course, this is all operating under the hypothetical that the coyotes are willing to move chychrun.
The league submits their offers. The coyotes get 10 offers, and the top nine are all topping out at a grade of 75/100. Then come the oilers. The coyotes view their offer as a 90/100, but edmonton is asking them to take back a contract that is a -10, bringing the overall value of the edmonton package to an 80. Still a win right there! The good news is, the coyotes have to add 30+ million to reach the cap floor, so that -10 value asset isn’t that big of a deal. The overall package is the best out there, and the ask in return is less damaging to them than any other team in the league.
To put it even more simply, if someone walked up to you and said, “i can either give you $10 for you to keep, or I can give you $20, but you have to give me $5 back,” which offer are you taking?
It’s a no brainer slam dunk.
